S. Sowmya is an acclaimed Carnatic vocalist, scholar, and educator known for her profound contributions to Indian classical music. Trained initially by her father Srinivasan and later under renowned gurus S. Ramanathan and T. Muktha, she made her concert debut at the age of 11 and has been a regular performer at the The Music Academy for over three decades. A recipient of prestigious honours including the Sangeetha Kalanidhi and Isai Perarignar awards, she also served as Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University. Holding Master’s degrees in Chemistry and Indian Music along with a Ph.D. from the University of Madras, Sowmya is equally respected as a researcher, mentor, author, and co-founder of Carnatica.
