Spotify has introduced paid podcast memberships, giving creators a new way to generate revenue by offering exclusive benefits to their most dedicated listeners. Announced on Tuesday, the feature allows podcasters to provide a range of subscriber perks, including bonus audio and video content, early access to episodes, reduced advertising and other exclusive experiences.

The company first unveiled plans for the feature during its Investor Day in May 2026, alongside artificial intelligence tools designed to help listeners ask questions about the content they consume and new features to simplify sponsorship management for creators.

The membership programme is now rolling out across 34 markets worldwide, including the United States. The move reflects Spotify’s broader strategy to strengthen its podcast ecosystem and attract more creators, particularly as competition in video podcasting intensifies with platforms such as YouTube.

Under the new programme, creators can retain 90% of their membership revenue and offer multiple subscription tiers with different prices and benefits. To qualify, podcasters must host their shows on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, have accumulated at least 100 hours of consumption, reached 100 listeners or viewers, and published a minimum of three episodes.

Listeners can discover membership options through individual podcast pages on Spotify, where they can subscribe and access exclusive material. However, purchases will be completed through the web rather than in-app transactions.

Several podcasts and creator networks are participating at launch, including The Adam Friedland Show, Making Sense with Sam Harris, Shawn Ryan Show, The Sculpt Society and Two Hot Takes. YMH Studios is also introducing memberships across 12 shows within its network.

The new offering expands Spotify’s existing creator monetisation options, which include advertising and the Spotify Partner Program. The platform also provides audience-development tools such as promotional features, free trials and analytics. Spotify plans to introduce additional membership benefits, including subscriber badges and personalised welcome clips, in the near future.

With the launch, Spotify is looking to help podcasters build stronger relationships with their audiences while creating more sustainable revenue opportunities beyond traditional advertising and bonus episodes.
