Q: Please share with us your roles and responsibilities at your university.
A: I’m heading the School of Engineering at SGT. In my school, I have Computer Science and Engineering, Computer Applications, Electronics, Mechanical and Civil Engineering. So, we are shaping the future generation.
Q: If I ask about the Tier 2 crowd coming to your university, what courses do they prefer more?
A: Currently, as we see, the trend is for Computer Science and Engineering. We are heavily pushing in Artificial Intelligence. We have a very massive infrastructure.
We have humanoid robots that we have procured just to give hands-on learning of the system, because normally what happens when we talk about AI, there is abstraction. People think that it is on your computers, but what we have got, we have put the green lights, we have prepared for you.
So, on their computer, machine learning, device recognition, pattern recognition, everything has been taught on the robots. So, that is Artificial Intelligence in motion. That is what they are doing.
So, I would say they are coming for Artificial Intelligence. That is the future, so that’s there in the future.
Q: How does skill and innovation blend with the current and the new courses at your university?
A: So, skill and innovation go hand in hand. So, if you have to innovate, you have to have that kind of skill. So, all these thoughts will not help. So, what we have done, like 50% of courses are skill-based.
Normally, what happens earlier, you have theory courses and the practical process. So, the ratio for us is skilling and the theory is 50%. Whatever we are teaching, 50% is the skill that automatically leads to innovation.
And just to brief you about the innovation ecosystem of SGT. We have an incubation centre. So, all the startups are being incubated in the centre. So, in the course, when the student is learning something, they have an idea. They can get incubated themselves in our centre and they start there. And we also support in terms of patent filings and such papers, and everything is included with the curriculum. So, there’s no separate part.
Q: What are your takeaways at today’s event, Digital Bharat Education Conference?
A: It’s a wonderful initiative because, as it was rightly mentioned, on the same platform we have the schools, university and the pre schools. So, all the three verticals of the education are there.
So, the gap which was there, what the schools are thinking, what the higher education leaders are thinking, is being bridged, and that too with the blend of AI, that’s great.
