Netflix subscribers won’t be able to share their passwords; confirms new Co-CEO

After more than 20 years as CEO of Netflix Inc., co-founder Reed Hastings steps down; Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos, both longtime associates, take his place. They have recently released information regarding the company’s future, which includes a plan to end password sharing in many nations. According to Peters, the new co-CEO, the vast majority of Netflix users who use the service but do not pay for it will soon be required to do so. He added in an interview with Bloomberg by saying that the regulated password sharing would be deployed gradually in order to keep the user experience on the video streaming platform even after it is put into place. He predicted that not everyone would like the event and that the company would have to cope with some unhappy customers. As its subscriber base increases by 15 to 20 million, the company intends to concentrate on developing nations like India. In November, Netflix unveiled a brand-new tier that is supported by advertising. The performance of the ad tier has been mixed; in its first month, it was Netflix’s least popular plan. However, the new tier led to a spike in new sign-ups on its first day and increased its percentage of Netflix sign-ups in December. In addition to saying that the advertising tier has brought in new, budget-conscious users, Netflix expressed pleasure with its progress. According to Bloomberg, most users of the advertising tier are brand-new subscribers rather than those who had previously subscribed to a more expensive plan.

Netflix’s revenue growth is expected to be the slowest as its ad strategy struggles to gain traction

Netflix Inc. is anticipated to report its slowest quarterly revenue growth on Thursday as its ad-supported plan struggles to attract customers in the competitive U.S. market, which might put pressure on the firm to reduce content investment this year. The pioneer in streaming has been struggling due to dwindling customer spending, rising production costs, and heightened competition from Disney+ and Amazon Prime. It had staked its hopes on the introduction of the ad-supported tier, but according to analysts, there hasn’t been a sudden surge in subscriptions. It is anticipated that the company attracted 4.5 million customers in the fourth quarter, which would be the smallest number for the Holiday season since 2014. 8.3 million more subscribers were gained last year. According to analysts, the $6.99 a month ad-supported plan does not include access to all titles and is too expensive to draw in a sizable number of users in the United States and Canada. There are some challenges in achieving those subscriber targets, according to Jamie Lumley, an analyst at Third Bridge. “Looking at the saturation of the market and the variety of different options available, as well as the fact that the pricing is not necessarily significantly below the competition, there are some challenges in attaining those subscriber targets,” he said. This is likely to bring attention to Netflix’s robust content investment, which, according to finance head Spencer Neumann, will amount to roughly $17 billion each year for the next few years. According to Shahid Khan, partner and global head of media and entertainment at Arthur D. Little, “when debt was cheap, you could go and borrow a lot of money and invest that in content.” Netflix will have to be extremely careful about approving content and how they would finance it given current interest rates. Compared with Paramount Global, rival Walt Disney Co anticipates spending on content in the low $30 billion range for the fiscal year 2023. Disney does not separate its content spending across its streaming and other divisions. Source: Reuters

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ by James Cameron earns $1 billion at the box office in just 12 days

It took James Cameron’s Avatar sequel just under 13 days to surpass the $1 billion milestone at the box office, despite its release thirteen years after the first movie of the science-fiction franchise. As of December 26, estimates indicate that the 2009 epic drama’s sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” had made over $955 million at the box office globally. Considering the Tuesday box office results, the movie is predicted to easily surpass the $1 billion mark. This places “Avatar: The Way of Water” after “Jurassic World Dominion” and “Top Gun: Maverick” as the third-highest-grossing film of 2022. Although it took Jurassic World four months and “Top Gun” more than a month to reach the milestone, “Avatar 2” did so in only 12 days. The film is anticipated to surpass the $2 billion mark and tie Avatar’s box office haul with the holiday season in full swing. Prior to the release of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s climactic “Avengers: Endgame,” Avatar held the record for biggest box office gross. The Avengers are once again overtaken by Avatar due to a 2019 rerelease in China. Although the Avatar sequel had a poor start in theatres, it has been picking up steam over time, particularly in international markets. As of Monday, the film had earned over $661 million worldwide. According to Deadline, the biggest international markets for the film are China ($104.5M), France ($60.5M), Korea ($55.4M), Germany ($41.5M), and India ($39.2M). The film has already outperformed top-grossing Bollywood films including “The Kashmir Files,” “Drishyam 2,” and “Brahmastra” in India. The Avatar: Way of Water is anticipated to be one of the highest-grossing films of the year in India and the highest-grossing Hollywood film in the nation as long as collections continue to be strong. On the beautiful planet of Pandora, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) continue their adventure in Avatar 2.

YouTube channels busted for spreading misinformation

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check Unit (FCU) said on Tuesday that it has busted three YouTube channels that were spreading misleading information in India, following a series of over 40 fact-checks. According to the bureau these YouTube channels had about 33 lakh subscribers and their videos, almost all of which were found to be false, garnered over 30 crore views. This is the first time, according to a statement, that PIB has exposed entire YouTube channels against individual posts on social media for promoting false information. The YouTube channels in question are News Headlines, which has 9.67 lakh subscribers and over 31 crore views; Sarkari Update, which has 22.6 lakh subscribers and over eight lakh views; and आज तक LIVE, which has 65.6 thousand subscribers and over one crore views. The statement cited fake news such as the ‘Supreme Supreme Court has ruled that future elections will be conducted by ballot papers,’ the ‘Government giving money to people who have bank accounts, Aadhar Cards, and PAN cards,’ and the ‘ban on EVMs,’ among others. According to the PIB statement, the YouTube channels were found to be using fake and sensational thumbnails with logos of TV channels and photographs of their news anchors to mislead viewers into believing the news was legitimate. These channels were also found to be placing ads on their videos, thus monetising misinformation on YouTube. The PIB Fact Check Unit’s action follows the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s recent blocking of over a hundred YouTube channels.

PT Usha becomes the Indian Olympic Association’s first female president

On December 10, legendary athlete PT Usha was elected as the first woman president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Usha, a multiple Asian Games gold medallist and fourth-place finisher in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics 400m hurdles final, was declared unopposed for the leading spot in the polls. The elections were overseen by retired Supreme Court judge L Nageswara Rao, who was appointed by the Supreme Court. According to reports, Usha’s election to the top job brought an end to the long-running issue in the faction-ridden IOA, which had been warned with suspension by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) if elections were not held this month. However, the polls were initially scheduled for December 2021. Nobody was willing to fight Usha, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in July, as the lone candidate for the top post. Apart from Usha, Ajay Patel of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) was elected unopposed as senior vice-president. As vice presidents, Olympic medalist shooter Gagan Narang and Rowing Federation of India president Rajlaxmi Singh Deo were elected unopposed. Sahdev Yadav, president of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF), has been elected treasurer. Former goalkeeper and All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey was chosen unopposed as joint secretary (male). After a three-way battle, Alaknanda Ashok of the Badminton Association of India (BAI) was elected as joint secretary (female). Suman Kaushik and Shalini Thakur Chawla were also in the race. Usha, fondly known as the ‘Payyoli Express,’ was the first Olympian and first international medallist to represent the IOA in its 95-year history. She is also the first sportsperson to have represented the country and also elected IOA president since Maharaja Yadavindra Singh in 1934. Singh was the third president of the IOA, serving from 1938 to 1960.
