Punjab Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer announced on Thursday that for the academic year 2022-23, his department will provide free uniforms to 15,49,192 government school students from grades 1 to 8. The education department has released a grant of Rs 92.95 crore, he said in an official statement.
Mr Hayer stated that Rs 50.72 crore has been granted for 8,45,429 girls, Rs 32.75 crore for 5,45,993 boys from the scheduled caste category, and Rs 9.46 crore for 1,57,770 boys from the BPL (below poverty line) category, out of the total beneficiary students.
The school management committees (SMCs) will distribute the free uniforms. The minister went on to say that the SMCs will spend Rs 600 per student on uniforms. The minister asked school officials not to buy uniforms from any specific shop.
