IIT Hyderabad sets up Centre for Creative Arts to bridge arts and technology

The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) has announced the establishment of a Centre for Creative Arts (CCA) within its Department of Liberal Arts, marking a significant step towards blending creativity with technical and scientific learning. According to the institute, the new Centre aims to embed artistic practices more deeply into engineering and science education. IIT Hyderabad has been nurturing creative and liberal arts for more than a decade, with structured initiatives beginning in 2014 through heritage tours for first-year students. Over the years, these efforts have grown into credited courses, and currently about 10 per cent of the undergraduate curriculum includes liberal and creative arts such as photography, fine arts, performing arts and crafts. The Centre for Creative Arts will offer elective courses ranging from one to three credits in creative and performing arts for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. It also plans to bring practicing artists on board as adjunct faculty and distinguished professors. Artist-in-Residence programmes will enable long-term interaction between students and professionals, encouraging cross-disciplinary engagement across engineering, science and design. In addition to teaching, the Centre will support research in the arts, including doctoral programmes. Visiting artists may act as co-supervisors for research scholars, helping integrate practice-based artistic knowledge with academic research. Collaborations with cultural organisations, including SPIC MACAY, are also planned to enrich campus activities. Beyond the campus, the Centre will run outreach initiatives for school students and art educators, with the objective of promoting early exposure to diverse art forms and strengthening ties between the institute and the broader community. Announcing the launch, IIT Hyderabad Director Prof B S Murty said the Centre reflects the institute’s vision of combining creativity, culture and technology in higher education. Welcome to the event, Dr. Sunil Rai. What are your key takeaways from today’s Education Leadership Summit? Firstly, I would like to congratulate you and your entire team for putting together this event with a very timely theme—expanding education, skills, and employability. The major takeaway for me is the need for total collaboration between governance, industry, and educators. Only then can we build strong bridges and capitalize on each other’s resources effectively. In today’s era, sports seem to be vanishing from academic curricula. What’s your perspective on the role of sports in education? Sports are a crucial component of character and personality building. At UPES, sports are not considered extracurricular—they are incurricular. All students are required to follow a health routine, be it yoga, zumba, running, or trekking. Additionally, students must pick up a sport—field or individual. If they perform well at the district level, they even receive CGPA credits up to point 1 to point 5 which is quite substantial. So yes, sports should be embedded in the curriculum, not sidelined. The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) emphasizes flexibility and inclusivity. What initiatives has UPES taken to align with this vision? We’ve implemented multiple NEP-aligned measures: Flexibility: Students can take up to 18 credits (6 exploratory courses) from any stream. For example, a law student can take a biotech course, or a biosciences student can explore design. Mobility: If a student realizes they’re in the wrong program (e.g., BTech X), they can switch as late as the end of the second year. Inclusivity: We ensure no student is denied education due to financial constraints. Financial support is arranged as needed. ArdorComm Media is celebrating its 4th anniversary. At the same time how are we going to be futuristic about implementing the various skill educations that are required to get our children future ready for 2030. How are you implementing technology in your school? We’ve implemented technology in an interdisciplinary manner. All our classrooms are smart classrooms, and our teachers are Microsoft certified, making us a digitally aware school. We encourage our students to apply their learning across different disciplines with an entrepreneurial mindset. In forums like this, where education leaders, EdTech players, and government representatives come together, how do you think such events benefit the education sector? Such forums are crucial for educators as they provide opportunities to network and understand the various learning platforms available in the market. Having speakers who work directly with the government, like Dr. Anup and Dr. Pratyusha from NCERT today, is encouraging. These events promote joyful learning for children, reduce the fear of examinations, and emphasize practical application of knowledge. Any message for our ArdorComm Media Group on its 2nd anniversary? ArdorComm Media is doing a wonderful job in bringing educators together, motivating us to be abreast with the latest technologies in learning and also bringing awareness in terms of what education has to offer on a nationwide forum and also helping us to collaborate and understand how we can implement it further in our schools.
