Historic 106-Year-Old School in J&K to Be Transformed into Heritage Institution

In a significant move to preserve educational legacy, the government has announced the redevelopment of one of Jammu and Kashmir’s oldest institutions, the Boys Higher Secondary School in Bhaderwah, into a heritage school. Originally established in 1920 as Amar Singh High School by Maharaja Pratap Singh, the institution holds the distinction of being the first high school in the Chenab Valley region. Located in Bhaderwah town of Doda district, the school has played a pivotal role in shaping generations of students for over a century. The foundation stone for the redevelopment project, estimated at ₹3.06 crore, was laid by Additional Deputy Commissioner Sunil Kumar Bhutyal in the presence of Principal and alumnus Kailash Chander. The initiative is being carried out under the ‘Prerna’ Heritage School scheme, aimed at revitalizing historic institutions into inspiring centres of learning. According to officials, the upgraded campus will offer an immersive educational environment while preserving the institution’s historical character. The project is also expected to strengthen emotional and cultural ties among alumni, many of whom have longstanding family connections to the school. Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Bhutyal noted that the redevelopment aligns with the broader vision of Narendra Modi to empower youth through meaningful educational reforms. The ‘Prerna’ initiative, he said, seeks to motivate students to become agents of positive change in society. Principal Kailash Chander described the development as deeply personal and historic, sharing that three generations of his family have studied at the institution. Leading the school after it has been granted heritage status, he added, is a moment of immense pride. The school’s academic affiliations have evolved over time, reflecting its longstanding prominence. Before India’s independence, it was affiliated with the University of the Panjab until 1947. It later came under the aegis of Banaras Hindu University and subsequently the University of Jammu and Kashmir. Since 1974, it has been affiliated with the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education. During the 2015–16 academic session, the institution was renamed Model Higher Secondary School. With this redevelopment, the century-old institution is set to enter a new phase—blending heritage preservation with modern education, and continuing its legacy of academic excellence. Source: PTI

J&K Government Plans Single-Window Digital Platform to Streamline Recruitment Processes

The Jammu and Kashmir government is gearing up for a major digital reform aimed at transforming recruitment procedures across all departments through a unified online system, officials confirmed on Saturday. Satish Sharma, Minister for Administrative Reforms, Inspections (ARI) and Trainings, chaired a high-level meeting to review the proposal. He stressed the need for simplifying administrative operations to ensure efficiency, transparency, and timely decision-making within government departments. According to an official spokesperson, the proposed Single Window Digital System will centralize the process of drafting and amending recruitment rules, paving the way for uniform policy enforcement and faster execution. Commending the ARI & Training Department for conceptualizing the initiative, Sharma directed that the system’s design and rollout be expedited in coordination with the General Administration Department (GAD), Finance, Law, and the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC). He highlighted that inter-departmental collaboration and accountability must be maintained throughout implementation. “This digital platform will eliminate administrative bottlenecks, ensure transparency, and bring consistency in recruitment practices across all departments,” Sharma said. “By integrating real-time monitoring and public access features, it will strengthen accountability and reinforce citizen trust in governance.” The minister instructed that the new system be linked with the existing E-Office framework, alongside capacity-building programs for departmental nodal officers to facilitate smooth adoption. The initiative envisions several benefits — including a uniform recruitment policy, reduced paperwork, quicker file processing, improved coordination between departments, and enhanced transparency through online tracking. As per the proposed model, the platform will feature secure departmental logins, digital templates for proposals, online routing among ARI & Training, Finance, Law, GAD, and JKPSC, and a centralized archive for all approved recruitment rules and amendments. It will also provide real-time SMS and email notifications, performance dashboards, escalation mechanisms for delays, and strong data protection protocols. Departments will be required to submit recruitment proposals within 30 days, followed by a 10-day processing window for each stakeholder department, ensuring final approval from the GAD within a fixed timeframe. The move, officials said, represents a decisive step towards a paperless, transparent, and efficient governance model in Jammu and Kashmir’s public administration. Source: PTI

Schools Reopen in Jammu and Kashmir Border Areas as Tensions Ease Between India and Pakistan

In a welcome move towards normalcy, the Directorate of School Education, Jammu, has announced the reopening of schools in several border regions of Jammu and Kashmir from May 15. The decision follows a period of heightened tension between India and Pakistan, which had led to the temporary closure of educational institutions for safety reasons. Students across districts like Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch are returning to classrooms after nearly a week-long suspension of academic activities. Zones in Jammu such as Chowki Choura, Bhalwal, Dansal, Gandhi Nagar, and Jammu are reopening their schools. In Samba, classes have resumed in the Vijaypur zone. Kathua district has also restarted educational operations in Barnoti, Lakhanpur, Sallan, and Ghagwal. In Rajouri, the affected zones of Peeri, Kalakote, Thanamandi, Moghla, Kotranka, Khawas, Lower Hathal, and Darhal have reopened schools. Similarly, in Poonch, educational institutions in Surankote and Buffliaz have resumed functioning. The move is a significant step towards restoring daily life and ensuring continuity in students’ education in these sensitive regions. The recent truce between India and Pakistan, marked by a halt in cross-border hostilities, has paved the way for this reopening. In Udhampur and parts of Kathua district—specifically Bani, Basholi, Mahanpur, Bhaddu, Malhar, and Billawar—government and private schools are also now operational. Morning visuals from Udhampur captured children enthusiastically returning to school in uniform, signaling a collective sigh of relief among families. This return to routine follows a tense period that began after the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives. India responded with targeted strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir under Operation Sindoor, reportedly neutralizing over 100 militants. The situation escalated briefly with retaliatory moves from Pakistan, but Indian Armed Forces swiftly countered the aggression. De-escalation efforts gained momentum after the Pakistani Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) reached out to his Indian counterpart, resulting in an understanding to cease further military actions. As classrooms once again fill with students and communities resume their daily rhythms, the reopening of schools stands as a hopeful indicator of peace returning to the border regions.
