Kidney Cancer Cases Could Nearly Double Worldwide by 2050: Study

A new global study warns that kidney cancer cases may almost double over the next quarter century if current health trends continue. Researchers from Europe, the US, and the UK examined data from the Global Cancer Observatory of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, projecting a dramatic surge in both incidence and mortality. In 2022, around 435,000 new cases and 156,000 deaths from kidney cancer were recorded worldwide. By 2050, the figures could rise to nearly 746,000 cases (a 72% increase) and over 304,000 deaths (a 96% rise), according to findings published in European Urology. The rise is linked largely to modifiable risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and physical inactivity, alongside environmental exposures. While 5–8% of cases are estimated to have a genetic basis, researchers emphasized that more than half of all kidney cancer cases are preventable. “Kidney cancer is becoming a global health challenge. Clinicians and policymakers must brace for this sharp increase,” said senior author Alexander Kutikov, Chair of the Department of Urology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in the US. He noted that lifestyle interventions—including maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood sugar and blood pressure, and quitting smoking—can substantially reduce risk. The study also revealed wide geographical and gender-based disparities in incidence and survival. Five-year survival rates currently range between 40% and 75%, with wealthier nations expected to benefit from early detection through routine imaging and better access to advanced treatments such as surgery and radiotherapy. The findings add to a broader global concern: a recent Lancet analysis estimated that annual cancer deaths of all types may climb by 75% over the next 25 years. MoPR to Launch Nationwide ‘Sabki Yojana, Sabka Vikas’ Campaign on Oct 2 to Strengthen Grassroots Planning

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR) is set to launch the nationwide “Sabki Yojana, Sabka Vikas” campaign on October 2, kicking off the People’s Plan Campaign (PPC) 2025–26 for preparing Panchayat Development Plans (PDPs) for 2026–27. First introduced in 2018, the initiative has helped Panchayats draft inclusive, evidence-based, and convergent development plans in line with both local needs and national objectives. As per data available on the eGramSwaraj portal, more than 18.13 lakh development plans have been uploaded since 2019–20, including 2.52 lakh plans under the current 2025–26 cycle. On September 26, Additional Secretary Sushil Kumar Lohani reviewed the readiness of States, Union Territories, and State Institutes of Rural Development in a virtual meeting. The MoPR has instructed States/UTs to strengthen monitoring systems, appoint nodal officers, train facilitators, finalize Gram Sabha schedules, and ensure public information boards are displayed before the end of September. The campaign will commence with Special Gram Sabhas on October 2, where past plans will be digitally reviewed through platforms such as eGramSwaraj, Meri Panchayat App, and Panchayat NIRNAY. Villages will also identify and prioritize incomplete projects funded under Central Finance Commission grants. Planning will be guided by the Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI) and supported by digital tools like SabhaSaar, with a push towards improving Own Source Revenue (OSR) and expanding community involvement. A special focus will also be placed on tribal empowerment through the Adi Karmayogi Abhiyaan. According to the ministry, this exercise is designed to strengthen participatory democracy, enhance transparency and accountability, and ensure better service delivery at the grassroots, reinforcing the role of Panchayats as vital institutions of rural governance. Coal India to Reward Non-Executive Workers with ₹1.03 Lakh Bonus Ahead of Festive Season

State-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) has announced a performance-linked reward (PLR) of ₹1.03 lakh for its non-executive employees ahead of the festive season. The decision, which also covers workers of its subsidiaries and state-run Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL), will benefit over 2.48 lakh employees in total. According to the Ministry of Coal, the incentive was finalized during the 6th meeting of the Joint Bipartite Committee’s standardisation panel. The payout is aimed at recognising the dedication and contribution of non-executive workers who form the backbone of coal mining operations. The PLR will be disbursed on a pro-rata basis linked to attendance and will involve a financial outlay of ₹2,153.82 crore for CIL and ₹380 crore for SCCL. Of the total beneficiaries, around 2.1 lakh are CIL employees and 38,000 are SCCL workers. Officials noted that the reward not only ensures fair compensation but also boosts morale, productivity, and job satisfaction among the workforce. With CIL accounting for more than 80% of India’s coal output, the move underscores its role in securing energy needs while supporting worker welfare. NCERT to Handle Equivalence of Class 10 & 12 Certificates Across All Boards

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will now be responsible for granting equivalence to Class 10 and Class 12 certificates issued by various school education boards across India. This equivalence will be applicable for admissions to higher education institutions as well as recruitment in government jobs, according to an official announcement on Friday. The Department of School Education and Literacy, under the Ministry of Education, has published the notification in the e-Gazette. This move replaces the earlier notification of November 15, 2021, which had entrusted the task to the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The responsibility will now be carried out by NCERT through its National Assessment Centre—Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH)—set up under the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. According to the ministry, this institutional mechanism will ensure that the process of granting equivalence is conducted with academic rigour while upholding the highest educational standards. The system will apply to all school boards established by the central and state governments, statutory bodies, or recognised institutions. Cabinet clears Phase 3 of medical college upgradation scheme, set to create 10,000+ new MBBS & PG seats

The Union Cabinet has approved the launch of Phase 3 of the centrally sponsored scheme aimed at expanding medical education infrastructure. Over the next three years, the scheme will add 5,023 undergraduate (MBBS) seats and 5,000 postgraduate (PG) seats in government medical colleges and institutes, with a budgetary outlay of ₹15,034 crore. This move is part of the government’s larger vision of creating 75,000 new medical seats within five years, as announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget. In earlier phases, the Centre supported the addition of 4,977 MBBS seats across 83 colleges at a cost of ₹5,972 crore, and 4,058 PG seats in 72 colleges with an allocation of ₹1,498 crore. Phase 2 provided ₹4,478 crore to increase 4,000 seats in 65 institutions. Currently, India has around 1.2 lakh MBBS seats and 74,306 PG seats — a sharp rise from 2014 levels of 51,328 MBBS and 31,185 PG seats. With over 20 lakh aspirants appearing annually for NEET, the demand for medical education remains extremely high. The expansion also aims to encourage students to pursue studies in India instead of seeking education abroad, an issue highlighted during disruptions caused by the pandemic in China, course recognition issues in the Philippines, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, the rapid increase has also brought challenges. A shortage of qualified faculty has persisted across many institutions. To address this, the National Medical Commission (NMC) introduced measures like Aadhaar-based biometric attendance, live CCTV monitoring, and permitted Diplomate of National Board (DNB) doctors to serve as faculty. Additionally, the age limit for teachers’ appointments was raised. Another concern has been the surge of new seats in private colleges where fees are often prohibitively expensive. Significantly, it also helped reduce harmful proteins associated with Parkinson’s disease in animal models, offering a potential breakthrough in non-invasive therapies for neurological disorders. Unlike current treatments such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), which require surgical implants, g-C₃N₄ interacts naturally with neurons. Acting like a smart semiconductor switch, it generates subtle electric fields in response to neuronal activity, opening calcium channels that encourage healthy cell growth and connectivity. The INST team confirmed their hypothesis through extensive tests, including Ca²⁺ imaging studies, gene expression analysis, and immunofluorescence assays, proving the material’s unique ability to modulate neurons without fatigue. Lead researcher Dr. Manish Singh described it as the first evidence of semiconducting nanomaterials directly influencing neuronal behavior without external triggers. He noted that the findings could transform treatments for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and brain injuries, while also laying the foundation for futuristic applications like brain-inspired computing using lab-grown brain organoids. Speaking at the National Film Awards ceremony, he highlighted the government’s commitment to boosting local production capabilities in the entertainment sector. Vaishnaw also revealed that the Centre is preparing Model State Cinema Regulation Rules aimed at harmonising permissions and approvals across states to make film production processes more seamless. The minister stressed the need to build a live concert economy, supported by clear policies, simplified permissions, and uniform guidelines, noting that such steps could significantly expand India’s creative industries. He reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of positioning India as a global content hub. To further this goal, Vaishnaw said the country’s first International Institute of Cinema and Technology (IICT) has already started operations at the NFDC campus in Mumbai. The proposal comes under the Global Talent Taskforce, a body launched in June and directly reporting to Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves. It is supported by a £54 million Global Talent Fund designed to cover relocation and research costs for exceptional individuals and their teams over five years. A senior government official told the newspaper that the idea of cutting visa fees “to zero” was being explored to target individuals from leading global universities or winners of internationally recognized awards. The move comes as the US, under President Donald Trump, imposed a steep one-time $100,000 fee on all new H-1B visa applications—widely used by the American tech sector, with Indians being among the largest beneficiaries. Chaired by Varun Chandra, the PM’s business adviser, alongside Science Minister Lord Patrick Vallance, the taskforce aims to simplify the UK’s Global Talent Visa route, which has long been criticized for being overly bureaucratic.
