In a decisive move to curb the circulation of explicit material online, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered the blocking of five over-the-top (OTT) platforms for allegedly streaming obscene content.
The platforms—MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel, and Jugnu—have been restricted following due process under the provisions of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
Officials stated that the action was taken in accordance with Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which empowers the government to block access to online content in the interest of public order, decency, and national security. As part of the enforcement mechanism, internet service providers have been directed to disable access to the identified platforms.
The IT Rules, 2021 are designed to regulate digital publishers and intermediaries, ensuring adherence to standards of decency and responsible content dissemination across online platforms.
