The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently published a list of counterfeit universities operating in India, with Delhi having the highest number of such institutions. The UGC has formally communicated with state government departments responsible for higher education, urging them to take appropriate actions against these fraudulent entities.
In an official letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellors of these institutions, UGC Secretary Manish Joshi stated that these entities are falsely claiming to be “Universities” under the UGC Act of 1956, despite not meeting the necessary criteria. They are using this deceptive practice to deceive and defraud unsuspecting students by granting counterfeit degrees, which has raised significant concerns as numerous students have fallen victim to these scams.
