Microsoft will not raise employee salaries this year: Report

Microsoft

According to an internal email sent by Microsoft Corp. CEO Satya Nadella, the company will not be increasing full-time staff salaries this year and will also be cutting back on its budget for incentives and stock awards. A request for comment from Reuters received no immediate response from the tech giant. The report quoted Nadella as stating, “Last year, we made a significant investment in compensation driven by market conditions and company performance, nearly doubling our global merit budget…this year, the economic conditions are very different across many dimensions.” Microsoft stated in January that it would lay off 10,000 employees, adding to the tens of thousands of layoffs that had already been reported throughout the IT sector as it struggles with slowing revenue growth in an uncertain economy. Microsoft has now dedicated its whole attention to generative AI, an area that the business community considers to be an advantage. Microsoft has been integrating artificial intelligence technology into its Office products and Bing search engine in partnership with OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT and has also gotten billions of dollars in funding from Microsoft. Congress Scores Landslide Victory in Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023, BJP Concedes Defeat

Congress Scores

The BJP has “not been able to make a mark,” Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai conceded, as the Congress was winning or leading in 136 of the state’s 224 assembly seats, comfortably exceeding the magic number of 113. According to the most recent trends on the Election Commission website, the BJP is leading in 64. The JD-S, which hoped to be the kingmaker, was leading in 20 seats. “Once the results come we will do a detailed analysis. As a national party, we will not only analyse but also see what deficiencies and gaps were left at various levels. We take this result in our stride,” stated Basavaraj Bommai. Exit polls had indicated that it would be a close contest, with the Congress emerging as the single-largest party but lacking sufficient support to surpass the 113-seat mark. According to the state’s chief election officer, Karnataka voted in a single phase and had 73.19 percent voter turnout. One of the main causes of the right-wing party’s defeat in the Karnataka assembly election in 2023, according to CM Bommai, was that the Congress began its election preparation much earlier than the BJP. “I take responsibility for this debacle. There are multiple reasons for this. We will find out all the reasons and strengthen the party once again for Parliament elections,” he told reporters. A party must win 113 seats in the 224-seat Karnataka assembly in order to form the government. Who the Congress chooses as their candidate for chief minister will now be the center of attention. Both DK Shivakumar, President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), and senior leader Siddaramaiah are eyeing the position. Rahul Gandhi of the Congress congratulated the people of Karnataka, where his party appears to have won a landslide win and would likely form the next government. At the Congress office in New Delhi, he said to the ecstatic party members that “the market of hate has been shut, and shops of love have opened.” According to him, “the power of poor people” won in the elections in Karnataka. This will happen again in other states as well. He continued, assuring that the party will keep the five promises it made during the first cabinet meeting of its government. “The Congress has fought for the issues of the poor,” he said.

G7 aims to launch a new vaccination program for developing nations

G7 aims

At the summit of world leaders next week, the Group of Seven (G7) rich countries are expected to decide to launch a new program to provide vaccines to developing nations, according to a report on Saturday in Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper. The World Health Organisation (WHO), the World Bank, and G20 countries like India will also join, it was stated, citing sources from the Japanese government. The COVAX facility, supported by WHO and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), provided emerging nations with over 2 billion doses of coronavirus vaccine during the COVID-19 pandemic. COVAX faced challenges in guaranteeing fair access, however, as wealthy countries prioritised vaccinations for their citizens, while insufficient storage facilities in poorer countries resulted in supply delays and the disposal of millions of doses that were close to expiration. According to the publication, the new program aims to pool rainy-day funds for vaccine manufacturing and purchases, as well as investments in low-temperature storages and training of healthcare professionals in preparation for the next pandemic. In order to counter the rising power of China and Russia, Japan, this year’s G7 summit chair, seeks to gain support from emerging nations on a variety of topics, including supply chains, food security, and climate change.

Karnataka election results update: Congress leads in initial rounds, BJP catching up

Karnataka election

The day of the results has arrived following intense election campaigning and record voter turnout in Karnataka. As counting begins today, all eyes are on the JDS, BJP, and Congress. Congress has jumped out to an early lead in the polls, but BJP is not far behind. The election was peacefully concluded on May 10 with a record voter turnout of 73.19%, higher than the previous record of 72.36%. The incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress (INC), and the Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS) fought it out in the election on three different sides. The counting will take place in 36 different centres throughout the state. By noon, it should become evident what the outcome will be. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party won 104 seats in the 2018 assembly elections, making it the single-largest party. The Congress came in second with 78 seats, and the Janata Dal (Secular) came in third with 37 seats. This time around, 2,615 candidates ran for election in the 224 Assembly constituencies. Notably, four exit polls gave the Congress party a full majority in Karnataka, and some predicted a hung assembly that would favour the party. A few exit polls also indicated that the BJP is leading in the race to form the government. According to ECI, the Congress leads in 85 seats, the BJP in 62 seats, and the JDS in 18. Leading in two seats are independents.

World Bank approves $82 Million in Funding for India’s Zoonotic Disease Prevention Efforts

world bank

The World Bank has approved $82 million in funding to support the prevention and control of zoonotic diseases in India. Zoonotic diseases are illnesses that can be transmitted from animals to humans, such as rabies, avian influenza, and leptospirosis. The project aims to strengthen India’s health systems and surveillance mechanisms to better detect and respond to zoonotic diseases. This will include the development of a national One Health platform, which will bring together experts in human, animal, and environmental health to better understand and prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases. “In India, around 68 per cent of the workforce relies on farming and remains in close contact with domestic animals and poultry, thereby becoming frequently exposed to sick or infected animals,” said Hikuepi Katjiuongua, Adarsh Kumar and Anupam Joshi, the Task Team Leaders for the program. The project will also support the development of rapid response teams, laboratory networks, and community-based surveillance systems. The funding will be provided over a period of five years and will be implemented by the Indian government’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Disney+ Hotstar faces subscriber losses amidst tough competition from JioCinema

Indian streaming service, Hotstar, owned by Disney, experienced a loss of 4.6 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2023, marking the second consecutive quarter of subscriber decline. This brings the total loss of subscribers to 8.4 million since October of 2022. Hotstar’s revenue also decreased, with the average revenue per subscriber falling from 74 cents to 59 cents in the quarter. The loss of subscribers is largely attributed to Hotstar’s loss of the rights to live stream the Indian Premier League cricket tournament to Viacom18’s JioCinema platform. Viacom18 is now streaming the tournament for free in India. Hotstar also terminated some distribution partnerships with telecom firms and its licensing agreement with HBO. The platform has around 53 million subscribers but is predicted to experience further subscriber loss, potentially reaching an additional 7 million by the end of the year. “Lower impressions were attributable to decreases in average viewership at our sports and non-sports channels. The decrease at our sports channels was primarily due to cricket programming, which reflected airing fewer Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in the current quarter compared to the prior-year quarter as the 2023 IPL season started approximately one week later than the 2022 season,” Disney said in its earnings report Wednesday.

Pension cannot be denied because of incorrect deductions: Supreme Court

According to a recent Supreme Court decision, an individual cannot be denied pension benefits just because their employer made incorrect deductions. Calcutta State Transport Corporation and others’ appeal was denied by the bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Rajesh Bindal. The appeal was filed in opposition to the High Court’s March 5, 2021 division bench judgement ordering the employer to release Ashit Chakraborty and others’ pension benefits. The company asserted in its appeal that the employee got notifications concerning typical withdrawals from his pay for the contributory provident fund. The employee did not object to these deductions at the time though. Only after his retirement did the problem come up. The company felt that he should not be qualified to receive benefits from the pension scheme in light of these facts. The employee responded to the appeal by stating that since he had decided to enrol in a pension scheme, it was the employer’s duty to correctly calculate his pay and make the necessary deductions for the various categories. Employee shouldn’t be punished or made to suffer as a result of a mistake the company made in this process. In agreement with the employee’s claim, the court rejected the corporation’s defence that other employees in same situations would also be eligible for similar treatment. The court reasoned that this would not preclude it from providing the employee the remedy he is entitled to. The judgement further noted that his rightful claim for a pension cannot be denied because certain improper deductions from his pay were made and he was classified as a member in the CPF scheme.
