World Bank approves $82 Million in Funding for India’s Zoonotic Disease Prevention Efforts

world bank

The World Bank has approved $82 million in funding to support the prevention and control of zoonotic diseases in India. Zoonotic diseases are illnesses that can be transmitted from animals to humans, such as rabies, avian influenza, and leptospirosis. The project aims to strengthen India’s health systems and surveillance mechanisms to better detect and respond to zoonotic diseases. This will include the development of a national One Health platform, which will bring together experts in human, animal, and environmental health to better understand and prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases. “In India, around 68 per cent of the workforce relies on farming and remains in close contact with domestic animals and poultry, thereby becoming frequently exposed to sick or infected animals,” said Hikuepi Katjiuongua, Adarsh Kumar and Anupam Joshi, the Task Team Leaders for the program. The project will also support the development of rapid response teams, laboratory networks, and community-based surveillance systems. The funding will be provided over a period of five years and will be implemented by the Indian government’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Disney+ Hotstar faces subscriber losses amidst tough competition from JioCinema

Indian streaming service, Hotstar, owned by Disney, experienced a loss of 4.6 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2023, marking the second consecutive quarter of subscriber decline. This brings the total loss of subscribers to 8.4 million since October of 2022. Hotstar’s revenue also decreased, with the average revenue per subscriber falling from 74 cents to 59 cents in the quarter. The loss of subscribers is largely attributed to Hotstar’s loss of the rights to live stream the Indian Premier League cricket tournament to Viacom18’s JioCinema platform. Viacom18 is now streaming the tournament for free in India. Hotstar also terminated some distribution partnerships with telecom firms and its licensing agreement with HBO. The platform has around 53 million subscribers but is predicted to experience further subscriber loss, potentially reaching an additional 7 million by the end of the year. “Lower impressions were attributable to decreases in average viewership at our sports and non-sports channels. The decrease at our sports channels was primarily due to cricket programming, which reflected airing fewer Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in the current quarter compared to the prior-year quarter as the 2023 IPL season started approximately one week later than the 2022 season,” Disney said in its earnings report Wednesday.

Pension cannot be denied because of incorrect deductions: Supreme Court

According to a recent Supreme Court decision, an individual cannot be denied pension benefits just because their employer made incorrect deductions. Calcutta State Transport Corporation and others’ appeal was denied by the bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Rajesh Bindal. The appeal was filed in opposition to the High Court’s March 5, 2021 division bench judgement ordering the employer to release Ashit Chakraborty and others’ pension benefits. The company asserted in its appeal that the employee got notifications concerning typical withdrawals from his pay for the contributory provident fund. The employee did not object to these deductions at the time though. Only after his retirement did the problem come up. The company felt that he should not be qualified to receive benefits from the pension scheme in light of these facts. The employee responded to the appeal by stating that since he had decided to enrol in a pension scheme, it was the employer’s duty to correctly calculate his pay and make the necessary deductions for the various categories. Employee shouldn’t be punished or made to suffer as a result of a mistake the company made in this process. In agreement with the employee’s claim, the court rejected the corporation’s defence that other employees in same situations would also be eligible for similar treatment. The court reasoned that this would not preclude it from providing the employee the remedy he is entitled to. The judgement further noted that his rightful claim for a pension cannot be denied because certain improper deductions from his pay were made and he was classified as a member in the CPF scheme.

Centre issues ‘advisory’ to mobile phone manufacturers to include an FM radio receiver in all handsets

The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued an advisory to all mobile phone manufacturers in India, requesting that they make sure that the FM radio receiver function is not disabled in phones sold in the country. This is done in order to clear up any confusion regarding compliance standards regarding the government-backed digital information network, the FM radio. The advisory comes only weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 91, 100-watt FM transmitters to improve radio connectivity throughout the country. The new phone manufacturers who do not already offer the FM radio feature have also been instructed by the Union government to add it to the mobile handsets that will be sold in India. All mobile phone manufacturers and brands are to get an advisory, according to a directive from the Union government to the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) and Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology (MAID). The advisory was issued in response to concerns that certain cell phone makers were omitting the FM radio from their newest models. All phones in the past, including smartphones, have an FM radio built in. The Union governance has insisted that the FM broadcast is a dependable communication system, especially during natural disasters when it acts as an essential link between local government and the general people. Using FM broadcast is also thought to be the most efficient way to spread early warnings and encourage people to take precautions for their own safety. The Centre has also stressed the significance of the huge FM transmitter network and FM radio that are accessible in India, which were crucial in that nation’s attempts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. The network of transmitters with All India Radio has expanded from 524 to 615, covering 73.5 percent of the country’s population. The recently launched FM Transmitters are located in 91 places throughout 84 districts in 20 states. A proposal to place 63 additional FM transmitters across the nation has also been approved by the Centre in addition to the aforementioned. The Centre asserts that the expansion of FM services in rural areas is due to the extensive reach of FM radio service and the accessibility of mobile phones with FM receivers.

The Union government reportedly requested international technology experts to evaluate India’s telecom stack in accordance with global standards at the recently concluded G7 Digital and Tech Ministers’ Meeting held in Japan. India highlighted the accomplishments of its major digital programs, including Aadhaar, UPI, and Cowin, at the G7 summit under the direction of Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Vaishnaw asserted during the conference that the surge of digitization sparked by the Digital India programme has not only assisted in building a robust digital infrastructure throughout the nation but has also aided in its widespread acceptance. The Union minister said on Thursday that India is emerging as a technology powerhouse and is garnering global attention for its growth journey in technological development. He expressed his satisfaction over the increased interest the world has in the Indian technology industry. Shopify announces sale of logistics business and 20% staff layoff

Shopify has announced that it will be selling the majority of its logistics operations to the supply-chain technology company Flexport, which will result in a 20% reduction in employment. Over 2000 workers at the company are thought to be impacted by the decision. The company will now be smaller as Flexport will shortly purchase their logistics division, according to a note from Tobi Lütke, CEO of Shopify, to shareholders and workers. As a result, some of Shopify’s staff would be leaving that day. Additionally, he acknowledged that this was a challenging choice and that he was aware of the terrible impact it would have on certain people. A severance package consisting of at least 16 weeks of compensation as well as an additional week for each year of service at Shopify will be provided to affected employees. According to the memo, they will also continue to get medical benefits, have access to employee support programs, and receive outplacement services during this time. Furthermore, impacted employees will be able to keep the furniture given by the company. The affected employees have been requested by the company to return their work laptops as it is legally required to do so, but doing so will enable them to purchase a new one. All affected employees will also continue to enjoy free access to Shopify’s advanced plan, which will support their future entrepreneurial endeavours. Shopify made job cuts last year throughout the month of July. A total of 10% of the company’s employees were let go, affecting almost 1,000 workers across various industries.
