PT Usha becomes the Indian Olympic Association’s first female president

On December 10, legendary athlete PT Usha was elected as the first woman president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Usha, a multiple Asian Games gold medallist and fourth-place finisher in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics 400m hurdles final, was declared unopposed for the leading spot in the polls. The elections were overseen by retired Supreme Court judge L Nageswara Rao, who was appointed by the Supreme Court. According to reports, Usha’s election to the top job brought an end to the long-running issue in the faction-ridden IOA, which had been warned with suspension by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) if elections were not held this month. However, the polls were initially scheduled for December 2021. Nobody was willing to fight Usha, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in July, as the lone candidate for the top post. Apart from Usha, Ajay Patel of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) was elected unopposed as senior vice-president. As vice presidents, Olympic medalist shooter Gagan Narang and Rowing Federation of India president Rajlaxmi Singh Deo were elected unopposed. Sahdev Yadav, president of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF), has been elected treasurer. Former goalkeeper and All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey was chosen unopposed as joint secretary (male). After a three-way battle, Alaknanda Ashok of the Badminton Association of India (BAI) was elected as joint secretary (female). Suman Kaushik and Shalini Thakur Chawla were also in the race. Usha, fondly known as the ‘Payyoli Express,’ was the first Olympian and first international medallist to represent the IOA in its 95-year history. She is also the first sportsperson to have represented the country and also elected IOA president since Maharaja Yadavindra Singh in 1934. Singh was the third president of the IOA, serving from 1938 to 1960.

Strong action taken against medical colleges not maintaining proper faculty: Mandaviya

The government announced on Friday that it has taken strong action against medical colleges that do not have proper faculty and that similar delinquent institutions will face similar action. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also told the Lok Sabha that in the case of government-run medical institutions, state governments are responsible for retaining faculty members, however in the case of private medical colleges, the obligation lies with the respective administration. Mandaviya stated that the central government continues to send inspection teams to medical colleges in addition to seeking commitments and affidavits from medical colleges in order to maintain proper faculty. “We have to give quality education to students, we have to produce good doctors. We have taken strong action against those institutions which were not maintaining proper faculty and some more action will be taken against some other institutions,” he said. The minister stated that the government would not hesitate to take harsh measures against medical colleges found to be involved in irregularities. In response to a question about the progress of the AIIMS Madurai, he stated that classes for students have already begun, and that work on the permanent building will begin soon after a delay due to changes in the proposed structure, resulting in a budget increase from Rs 1200 crore to Rs 1900 crore. “The government of India is committed to serve the people of Tamil Nadu through AIIMS Madurai. No need to worry, we will complete the project. We will build a good AIIMS (in Madurai),” he stated. Mandaviya noted that in order to increase the availability of qualified human resources in health and to reduce disparities in the country’s existing geographical distribution of medical colleges, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for the establishment of new medical colleges attached to existing district or referral hospitals, with preference given to underserved areas and aspirational districts where no existing government or private medical college exists. According to him, 157 medical institutions have been sanctioned under the programme in three phases, with funds shared between the Centre and State Governments in the ratio of 90:10 for Northeastern and Special Category States and 60:40 for others. According to the scheme guidelines, the state government is the implementing agency, and the state government is responsible for project development, implementation, and commissioning. The scheme’s funds are released based on the rate of expenditure, the release of the appropriate state share, and the receipt of utilisation certificates, as well as demand from the state and UT governments, he explained. DU to increase batch strength in lectures by 50-60%: Executive Council

Delhi University has decided to increase the number of students in a lecture by around 50 to 60% per batch, a move that has been opposed by teachers. According to the university’s new plan, the number of students in tutorials would triple. The resolution was passed by the university’s Executive Council on Thursday, with two EC members dissenting, claiming that the effort to raise the student-teacher ratio will have an impact on the quality of education. According to EC member Seema Das, the DU has set a cap of 60 students each batch for lectures, 30 for tutorials, and 25 for practical classes in undergraduate programmes. Previously, the number of students in lectures in graduate courses was set at 40, while the number of students in tutorial and practical sessions was set at 8 to 10 and 15 respectively. Postgraduate courses have 50, 25, and 15-20 students per batch, accordingly. On November 11, the university issued a notification to colleges in this regard. “The Executive Council accorded its approval regarding uniformity in the teacher-student ratio in all the programmes and courses being offered by the university and its colleges, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels vide the notification,” Das added. Several teachers’ bodies have spoken out against the notification, citing “bigger-than-ideal” batch sizes. The dissenting members have stated that the November 11 notification will have a negative impact on the quality of learning at colleges and university departments. Registrar Vikas Gupta stated in the notification that the regulation was created to provide uniformity in teacher-student ratios across all of the university’s programmes. According to the dissenting members, increasing the tutorial group size to 30 students for UG courses and 25 for PG courses “negates” the concept of small group interaction and denies students the ability to gain a deeper knowledge and clarify their doubts. Edtech unicorn Vedantu lays off 385 employees, implements pay cuts for leadership

Vedantu, the edtech unicorn, has laid off 385 employees, bringing the total number of layoffs this year to almost 1,000. Senior executives will also face pay cuts. Vedantu laid off 624 staff in May of this year, followed by another 100 three months later. The Company is trying to rationalise while focusing on rapid growth. As part of this cost-cutting and rationalisation effort, the Company’s leadership, including the founders, will take a 50% pay cut. Vedantu recently paid $40 million for Deeksha. The latter is a platform established in Karnataka that assists students in preparing for board and competitive exams. This was a first step toward going hybrid. In Muzaffarpur, the company had lately constructed a ‘hybrid’ coaching centre. Given the global economic uncertainty, Vedantu has merely done what other companies are doing today. Fear of a recession and inflationary conditions are affecting businesses worldwide, causing them to cut costs. As the need for online coaching has decreased following the pandemic and schools have reopened, most edtech platforms have established physical coaching centres across the country. Vedantu became a unicorn in September 2021, after raising $100 million in a Series E funding round led by ABC World Asia. Tiger Global, Coatue Management, GGV Capital, and WestBridge were among the other investors. Vedantu was founded in 2011 by Vamsi Krishna, Pulkit Jain, and Anand Prakash, alumni of IIT-Delhi.
