IISc Bangalore and Nokia team together to establish a Center of Excellence for Robotics

A Center of Excellence (CoE) has been established by a collaboration between Nokia and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). As part of this collaboration, IISc Bangalore will host a robotics lab that will carry out cutting-edge research projects on developing next-generation networks and using AI to address pressing social issues. Along with faculty and other resources, IISc will contribute its internal expertise in algorithms, drones, and robotic systems. In accordance with the official statement, Nokia will contribute its “expertise in next-generation network innovations and leverage Nokia Bell Labs’ technical expertise in robot orchestration, robot network controller, and human-robot interaction to aid the research and development of the end-to-end use case technology solutions.” In this collaboration, students will use drones to remotely manage agricultural orchards in order to encourage water conservation and prevent direct interaction between humans and pesticides. They will also look into drones, which will gather situational information using a 5G-enabled wide-area network, enabling first responders to save lives by swiftly reaching the impacted areas during disaster assistance. They will also look into using drones for things like predicting crop fires. The CoE will receive three years of funding from Nokia to support the initial stage of the partnership between Nokia and IISc. “Next generation communication technologies like 5G and 6G will contribute enormously to the growth of India’s economy. Our collaboration with a world-class company like Nokia will enable us to explore new frontiers for advanced technology research to benefit society as well as provide state-of-the-art training to our students to enable them to become technology leaders in the coming decades,” IISc director Govindan Rangarajan said.

Mother & daughters clears Tripura board examinations

Shila Rani Das, 53, who passed the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) exams on Wednesday alongside her two daughters, proved that age is not a bar to education. Shila took the Madhyamik (Class 10) board exam this year, and her two daughters took the Higher Secondary Exam (Class 12). The recently released the results, brought about a triple thrill. At a young age, Shila Das got married, and soon after, her spouse passed away, which ended her aspirations to further her education. She was alone responsible for raising her two daughters. After some time had passed, both girls demanded that their mother take the board exam. Shila then prepared for the exam with the help of her daughters. Shila stated in a statement to ANI, “I am happy that I’ve passed the exam. My daughters and other people supported me and inspired me to do it. I was confident that I will clear the exam.” She studied from Agartala’s Abhoynagar Smriti Vidyalaya. Jayashree, Shila’s daughter, completed her HS exam from Agartala’s Bani Vidyapeeth Vidyalaya. Nairobi fly infection scare in North Bengal after Sikkim

The Darjeeling district administration has issued a warning on insect prevention after the acid fly or Nairobi fly infection has caused fear in a number of North Bengali communities. The insect primarily infects children and people with delicate skin. According to officials, the virus originally surfaced in Sikkim and has since spread. The virus has currently infected over 100 students at North Bengal University (NBU), Siliguri. Numerous students have left their hostels in a state of such anxiety and panic to return home. “We have issued an advisory on preventive measures such as wearing full sleeves, avoiding going outside in the evening, using mosquito nets, and using dim light inside houses,” said Darjeeling District Magistrate S Ponnambalam. Infected individuals should seek medical attention right away. According to the director of the Darjeeling District Hospital, the issue is merely a skin disease. In Darjeeling, there are now 3–4 cases, but none of them necessitate hospitalisation. People need to be cool and not panic because nothing seriously threatening would occur in this situation. In actuality, we are unsure whether the three to four patients who arrived coincidentally suffered an insect bite. I will however request a thorough explanation from my seniors. The District Magistrate declared, “Our goal right now is to control the infection and trace the breeding places. I request people not to panic.”

Netflix to stream Alia Bhatt-starrer ‘Darlings’ on 5th August

India sees a 42% growth in Research & Development jobs: Indeed survey

A survey found that, in May 2022, compared to the same month in 2019, job postings for research and development (R&D) job roles increased by 42%. More than 1.3 million people are directly employed by these, and they bring in more than $33.8 billion annually. The Make In India initiative, which aims to promote innovation, improve skill development, and produce the best talent possible in the nation, is another factor supporting this growth. UP’s directorate of higher education will launch an e-Content studio

The state government has allocated 10 crore for the hiring of 1200 lecturers in aided colleges and the creation of smart classrooms in 87 government colleges in order to close the digital divide and promote e-learning techniques in government colleges, according to a state government press release. The directorate of higher education will spend Rs. 1 crore on the development of an e-Content digital studio in addition to smart classrooms. After that, it will be used to record and update information that will eventually be used to run virtual classes. About 2,273 government inter colleges have biometric attendance devices installed by the state government. According to the press release, the government has also finished appointing roughly 1200 teachers at the same time. The press release further states that this was a component of the 100-day work plan since the Yogi Adityanath government 2.0 was established in March. Additionally, 36 government degree colleges have had their laboratories upgraded for a cost of 10.51 crore, and 111 government institutions will receive technical books for a further 2.03 crore. The expansion of sports facilities in 172 government institutions has received approval from the government.

Coal India invites online applications for various positions

Coal India (CIL), a Schedule ‘A’ Maharatna public-sector undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Coal, has declared its plans to recruit management trainees for various open posts in human resources, personnel, and other administrative areas. The environment department has 68 openings, followed by personnel and HR with over 138, and materials management with over 115. 17 positions in marketing and sales, as well as around 79 in community development, are open. A further 54 individuals are being hired by CIL for roles in its legal department, six for public relations, and four for company secretary. Candidates with graduate degrees in related fields, postgraduate degrees, or postgraduate diplomas may apply. Only the results of the online test will be used to determine which candidates will be chosen. For the General (UR), OBC (creamy layer and non-creamy layer), and Economically Weaker Section (EWS) categories, the non-refundable application fee is Rs 1000 plus applicable GST of Rs 180, for a total of Rs 1180. Candidates from the following groups are exempt from paying this application fee: SC/ST/PwD/ESM candidates/employees of Coal India and its subsidiaries. According to the guidelines, the maximum age for applicants in the General (UR) and EWS categories is 30 years as on May 31, 2022. Starting on 8 July 2022, candidates may submit their applications via the CIL website, coalindia.in. The deadline for applications is August 7, 2022.

Government to fund BSNL, ITI pilot project to develop 4G, 5G, and e-band technologies

In order to develop state-owned technology for 4G, 5G, and E-band spectrum services, the government will fund a pilot project involving startups and state-owned firms BSNL and ITI, according to an official statement. The initiative would also involve the government’s telecom research organisation C-DoT, which in partnership with TCS-Tejas Networks was instrumental in creating the first 4G and 5G telecom network technology to be made in India. In an official statement, it was stated that the “Department of Telecommunications (USOF), Ministry of Communications, had signed an agreement with Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) Limited and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to fund the pilot projects of E-band, LTE indigenous technologies, including integration of 4G/5G prototypes with C-DoT core.” Four pilot projects, each costing about Rs. 10 crores, are being funded by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) as part of its effort to introduce new technological developments in the telecom sector in rural and remote areas. These initiatives would be carried out by the indigenous companies Astrome Technologies, Lekha Wireless Solutions, Resonous Technologies, and Signaltron in collaboration with the C-DoT and DoT public sector organisations BSNL and ITI, according to the statement. 64% of Indians are confident after receiving two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, not interested in precautionary dose: Survey

Mumbai: YouGov’s latest survey illustrates the attitudes of urban Indians on the COVID-19 booster dose amid new emerging variants and the fear of a potential fourth wave of the virus. Although 85% of urban Indians have received the COVID-19 vaccine, 11% are still waiting for their second dosage, and 5% have not received the vaccine and do not want to in the future. A higher proportion (74%) of people who have received the vaccine in both doses demonstrate an unwavering desire to get the booster dose. One in ten people are still doubtful about their choice, and nearly one in five (18%) are reluctant to take another shot. In comparison to tier I cities, tier II-III cities appear to have a higher rate of vaccine reluctance. Perhaps the rising number of cases in major cities and towns is prompting people in Tier 1 cities to protect themselves with an additional dose of the vaccine. Many people who have received the vaccination in its two doses are inclined to take the booster dose, but when we look at those who do not, the majority of respondents (64%) say that their faith in the vaccine in its two doses is the main reason they do not want to take a precautionary dose. Nearly one in five (19%) reported being afraid of the immediate adverse effects, such as fever, while 17% expressed concern about the supposed long-term side effects of the vaccines (like heart attacks, medical complications, etc). 15% of people have doubts about the booster dose’s efficacy, while 13% admitted they took the first dose of Covid against their will (due to travel or other obligations). Through the Har Ghar Dastak 2.0 campaign, which launched earlier last month, the Indian government has already administered more than 198.09 (1,98,09,87,178) crore vaccinations against COVID-19. It has also been actively working to improve vaccine coverage among the elderly. However, many people have not yet received the second dose of the vaccination or have not yet received a booster shot. In response to a question about whether the government should enforce booster dosages due to the rising number of cases, 76% of respondents said yes. Meta to reduce hiring of engineers by 30%

Meta Platforms Inc. has opted to hire fewer engineers than it had initially planned since it anticipates a recession. Meta will now hire only around 6,000 new engineers, which is 30% less than the 10,000 new engineers it had originally planned to hire.
