Dr. I.K. Bhatt, Vice Chancellor, Manav Rachna University, Faridabad on the adaption of technology in education

One good thing that has happened during this period in this new normal is that there has been a very good interaction between the academic institutions and the industry said Dr. I.K. Bhatt, Vice Chancellor, Manav Rachna University, Faridabad in an interview with Chandan Anand, Founding Editor, ArdorComm Media Group.  How does such kind of events, education summits, or Knowledge forums help the academicians and the education fraternity? In meetings like this you interact with people, understand what are the view points of others and try to pick up the best ideas to implement them in your own way in your own institutions. We at Manav Rachna University have been doing it and the ultimate aim is that the student should learn. With this covid which imposed certain restrictions on the learning of students because they were not physical present on the campus and therefore we had to have communication with the students which was done through different mechanisms, using different means, technology and therefore we have really moved away from what was normal at that time and a new normal has been created which is where we are now working. When we look at this scenario, probably educators were the last to really make implementation of the new technology but covid has made it really mandatory for us and it has really moved all the education institutions within a span of six months, and everybody started delivering for the students so that their time is not wasted. Now when we look at this it also gave us an opportunity to look at various people, meet industries globally in fact initially it was difficult to interact with people in different places but covid gave us an opportunity, especially to the education institutions that we could interact with any person sitting anywhere in the world actually. Their ideas came quite useful for the university as well as for all the academic institutions. One good thing that has happened during this period in this new normal is that there has been a very good interaction between the academic institutions and the industry and therefore they have become partners not only in delivery but designing of the courses and then delivering it together along with the faculty members and I’m sure that over a period of time, in another three to five years we will see a major change in the attitude, in the learning skills and also all of these students who are studying now will be employable because now the industry is part of this teaching learning process.  Any technological advancement or implementation which has happened in Manav Rachana University which you would like to emphasize on? We already had all the systems in place but we were probably using 20% of it and when the covid came, all these technologies, we had ERP, LMS, all these we integrated totally. In fact, we were the first in the country, not even the IITs were at that time, we were the first in the country to really implement this in that particular manner and I congratulate the teachers really, they have done a wonderful job. Using these new technologies have also changed the methodology of teaching, the pedagogy of teaching and several of them which we earlier used to only talk about have now been implemented in our system.  According to you what factor should we keep in mind for accepting or adapting a technology in a university? The first thing which needs to be done when we pick up a technology because several technologies are available now throughout the country and globally in fact. The first thing which needs to be done is training of teachers, if a teacher is not conversant with the technology, nothing works therefore the first thing is teaching the teachers to be trained if they are trained and conversant with the technology, they know how to use it, they know how to deliver and how to evaluate, assessment process becomes the most important thing when we are talking about learning. Therefore, I personally believe that training of teachers both in terms of domain knowledge which they have, using technological tools and pedagogies because these different technologies, these different ways of handling things, in these areas they need to be aware of.

3 Challenges While Choosing a Career Path and How To Solve Them!

Are you stressed about choosing a right career path? Well, you don’t have to worry about it. In today’s ever changing job market and global economy, there are always new things to switch and merge into. If you are not sure on what to follow for the rest of your life, you can invest your time in finding short term goals. After a certain point of time (or experimenting), you can switch to other things you like. You can find your long-term goals while doing other things. One thing that we are pressured into by our families, mentors, schools, universities, teachers and the society is to find a job that pays! Earning money is certainly a very big part of your life, but you shouldn’t let your decisions and thought processes be crowded with it. You career path should be related to things you internally like and it should be rewarding emotionally, mentally and physically. The modern-day youth doesn’t like to stick to one thing! They love to explore and that is what is constantly pushing innovations in the market. However, if you are stressed about taking a decision for you career, here are a few challenges that you might face. 1)     Lack of Right Guidance Well, we are not saying that you won’t find guidance or people to talk to about your interests. In the information and social era, it is very easy to connect with people who share the same interests. But sometimes, too much information or the wrong sources may derail you from your path to the right door. Hence, instead of basing decisions on generic advice, you should let your intuition and inner voice guide you. Interacting with people from the same field may be the best option to go with, but do not let certain demerits or difficulties waiver you to choose a different option. Connecting with the right advisors or stakeholders will help you garner important insights to form a base for your decision. 2)     Parental and Peer Pressure (Yes, it still exists!) Our parents come from a time when they were either hushed to work for tasks they weren’t interested in, or they simply had to work somewhere because there weren’t any other lucrative options at the time. Only a few pursued their real dreams and landed their dream jobs. Often you will hear your peers or parents discuss about how problematic it is to get into certain type of career paths, but don’t let those discussions cloud your judgement. Every person has a different ability, IQ and EQ. One other problem with parental and peer pressure is that it tends to make you a part of the herd mentality. Maybe your parents and peers are very supportive about the decisions you want to make for yourself, but if you have over indulging parents who are trying to push you into certain career paths just because other people have made it big there, you shouldn’t get influenced by it. You should most importantly, try to understand that it is not necessary to match your academic achievements with your career path. If you want to pursue music, sports or art, you should definitely go for it. Everything is possible with good research and determination! Try researching as much as you can from various sources before making a decision. After you are sure, you can try convincing your parents with facts, figures and most importantly, “Why” you want to make the choice for yourself. 3)     Foreign Opportunities and Salary-Based Decisions Many students are captivated by videos, pictures and the lifestyle that people live outside India. That all sounds great, but you should not base your career decisions just because you want to go abroad or someone else in your group is doing it. You have to think from a rational mind about the field you are opting for and the country you want to choose. It is a struggle for many students to settle down abroad, however, opting for the right courses, the right country and the right university will help you get a decent job. You should always research or talk to people you know who are working in foreign countries before coming to a conclusion. The other dilemma that all students go through is choosing between things they actually like and choosing between a career path that will give them economical leverage. However, things you have to consider before taking salary-based decisions are: If you actually like the job Will you fit in well with the environment? Will it give you mental peace and satisfaction? If you are good at it Will you able to stay healthy and fit at the job? All of the above-mentioned factors may seem unimportant now, but as you start progressing and working, a healthy and positive work environment is must for your overall wellbeing. Conclusion Do not let fear, money, pressure or greed guide your decision-making. Choosing a career path is crucial for your life and so is deciding to switch to something else later. Do not let the fear of low bank balance dominate your true calling. You should try to explore new things as much as you like. With the right research, a healthy mind and the zeal to stay relevant, you can figure out the best career paths for yourselves.

EPFO Announces Centralized Process of Money Transfer, No Need to Open New Account After Job Change

Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation’s (EPFO) Central Board of Trustees (CBT) has approved the development of a centralised IT- enabled system by C-DAC. It is aimed at initiating the integration of all EPF accounts to make it easier for employees to change their jobs without the worry of transferring their EPF accounts to their new workplace. In an official statement, Union Labour Minister of State, Bhupender Yadav, explained that after the centralised system is implemented, the field functionalities will be shifted to a central database in a phased manner, to help carry out operations in a smoother manner. The perks of the process are: It will facilitate the duplication and merger of all PF accounts of the members It will remove the requirement of transfer of account on change of job Despite digitization and new technologies, even today when people leave their jobs, they are required to open a new EPF account and then have the money transferred to the new account. They have to perform this process online, on the Member Sewa portal of the EPFO, using their Universal Account Number (UAN), which should be linked with Aadhaar. If the UAN is not linked with Aadhaar, then the employees will have to submit a new form to their new employer to get the process of money transfer started. To our joy, the new system will remove all the pain of transferring all the money to our new accounts when we shift our jobs. Zee-Sony merger deal in final stages, says Punit Goenka

Punit Goenka, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of media and entertainment company Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd Ltd, has said the proposed merger with Sony Pictures Networks India, is “in final stages of stitching up.” Speaking at the APOS India Summit by MPA (Media Partners Asia), Goenka said such consolidation has always benefited the media and entertainment industry. MPA is an independent provider of research, advisory and consulting services in media, telecom, sports and entertainment for Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. “I certainly believe that consolidation is going to benefit the industry overall,” said Goenka. “Zee and Sony will form the largest media entertainment player in the country. Our revenues on a standalone basis combined will be close to $2 billion, and the capital growth that Sony is going to infuse in the merge entity will really give us the opportunity to invest in premium content and that includes sports,” Goenka said. Pointing out the reasons for the merger, he added that businesses of the two companies are complementary in nature, with minimum overlap. as an example, Zee that had sold Ten Sports to Sony in 2017, will now see the sports genre return stronger for the merged entity. “The opportunity is great, because the digital landscape has opened up a new opportunity for monetization, which did not exist five years ago. and the sector itself will see a lot more happening going forward. So certainly, sports will become an area of focus for the merged entity,” Goenka said, also addressing the speculation around the new entity bidding for the rights to the upcoming IPL (Indian Premier League). “But the decision for bidding or not bidding, and bidding at what value etc., will be taken by the board of the new merged company, and not by me individually,” he added. Calling government regulation for the broadcast sector “far from light-touch,” Goenka said India will remain both a TV and digital market in the foreseeable future and that Zee, as a company will continue to invest in linear television while trying to grow its digital pie. To be sure, Zee’s founding family has been embroiled in a bitter battle with Invesco, its largest shareholder which has approached a division bench of the Bombay high court to challenge an earlier order that restrained the US fund manager from calling a special shareholders’ meet to remove Goenka and reconstitute the Zee board. Zee has challenged Invesco’s plan to restructure the board in courts and alleged that the US investor is trying to take over India’s largest publicly-traded broadcaster at the behest of another company.
