Tripura Government to Implement E-Attendance System in Government Schools

In an effort to enhance the quality of education and monitor the performance of teachers and students, the Tripura government has announced plans to introduce an e-attendance system in all 4,912 government schools. The move, to be implemented under the Vidya Samiksha Kendra initiative, aims to bring transparency to the academic system and improve the overall functioning of schools. The digital attendance system will cover both teachers and students, with the entire process expected to be completed within a two-year timeframe. Initially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat in 2022, the Vidya Samiksha Kendra initiative is designed to enhance educational outcomes by leveraging technology and providing real-time monitoring of educational initiatives. Following the implementation of the e-attendance system, a geo-tagging feature will also be introduced to facilitate online access to essential school-related information. Once the e-attendance system is fully operational, monitoring of teacher and school performance will be conducted by the Chief Minister, relevant ministers, and senior officials. Training sessions for headmasters and other stakeholders are already underway to familiarize them with the new digital system. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who oversees the Education Department, recently inaugurated the state’s first Vidya Samiksha Kendra in Agartala. This center aims to digitize educational data, provide real-time visibility into educational initiatives, and support decision-making through data analysis and AI. With over 37,000 teachers and nearly 700,000 students enrolled across various levels of school education, the introduction of the e-attendance system is expected to significantly improve accountability and transparency in Tripura’s education sector.

ICMR Releases Dietary Guidelines, Links 56% of Diseases in India to Diet

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has released 17 dietary guidelines aimed at meeting essential nutrient requirements and preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like obesity and diabetes. According to the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), estimates suggest that 56.4% of the total disease burden in India is attributable to unhealthy diets. The guidelines emphasize the importance of healthy diets and physical activity in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), hypertension (HTN), and type 2 diabetes. They recommend measures such as restricting salt intake, moderating the use of oils and fats, engaging in regular exercise, and minimizing consumption of sugar and ultra-processed foods. Dr. Hemalatha R, Director of ICMR-NIN, led a multi-disciplinary committee of experts in drafting the guidelines, which underwent scientific review. The aim is to promote informed and healthy food choices, encourage adoption of a healthy lifestyle, and address issues related to malnutrition. Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of ICMR, highlighted the relevance of the guidelines in addressing the changing food landscape in India. He emphasized the importance of promoting holistic nutrition and health while tackling the prevalence of non-communicable diseases. The guidelines advocate for a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods, limiting cereals to 45% of total calories, and incorporating pulses, beans, meat, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and milk for essential nutrients. The NIN underscores the need to address the limited availability and high cost of certain food items, which can lead to inadequate intake of essential macronutrients and micronutrients, increasing the risk of metabolic disorders from a young age.

Amit Shah Prioritizes Rupee Trade as Top Agenda for New Government

Amit Shah, the Home Minister of India, has emphasized the significance of trade conducted in the Indian rupee, calling it a top priority for the new government. The move to facilitate trade in the national currency has reached its final stages of negotiation with several countries, although matters have been temporarily suspended due to ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Shah highlighted the potential of rupee trade as a significant step forward, citing the country’s robust fundamentals and the relative stability of the Indian currency against most international counterparts. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that many countries are showing interest in establishing trade relations based on rupee transactions. Following the Reserve Bank of India’s July 2022 circular permitting invoicing, payment, and settlement of trade in Indian rupees, rupee invoicing has gained traction. India has already initiated rupee trade with neighboring countries like Nepal and Bhutan, while efforts are underway to facilitate trade in the national currency with Russia and Sri Lanka. The transition to rupee invoicing is expected to bring various benefits, including lower transaction costs, enhanced price transparency, faster settlement times, and reduced hedging expenses. Additionally, it is anticipated to contribute to the internationalization of the rupee and alleviate the burden of holding foreign reserves by the RBI. Sitharaman emphasized India’s stable economic fundamentals, transparent taxation policies, and robust systems, which have bolstered investor confidence and positioned India as an attractive destination for trade and investment. With a growing middle class and a sizable market, India’s economic prospects appear promising, garnering attention and engagement from global partners. Overall, the prioritization of rupee trade underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging India’s economic strengths and fostering stronger trade ties on both regional and international fronts.

Akamai Technologies has announced its acquisition of API security firm Noname Security for $450 million, aiming to extend protection across all API traffic locations. The acquisition underscores Akamai’s commitment to enhancing API security by focusing on improved discovery of “shadow” APIs and detection of API vulnerabilities and attacks. This strategic move comes as Akamai showcases its security offerings at the RSA Conference 2024 in San Francisco. Tom Leighton, Co-Founder and CEO of Akamai, highlighted the company’s strong results in API security, citing prior success with the acquisition of Neosec.
