Yeah, it was a good event as I got a lot of new learnings. There were people from public universities, private universities, corporates, so it was a really good session. Could you highlight what Anthology is offering to the K-12 as well as the higher education sector? We are globally one of the largest education technology providers for higher education. We are in 80 plus countries and work with around 8,000 plus institutions. We offer end-to-end solutions for students, from the time they take admission to the time they become alumni. We incorporate the best of Enterprise Solutions, from teaching and learning to operations to CRMs. We have it all. We have been in India for some time under different names, and we primarily promote our SIS (Student Information Systems) and our Learning Management Solutions under the Blackboard name. What is the vision and mission of Anthology? We are in the business of education, so we aim to spread education across the globe and improve from an India perspective. India Leads Global Preterm Births in 2020, Lancet Study Reveals

In 2020, India witnessed the highest number of preterm births globally, with a staggering 3.02 million cases, constituting over 20 percent of all premature births worldwide, as revealed by a study published in The Lancet journal. This research, conducted by experts from the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK, further disclosed that more than half of all premature births in 2020 occurred in just eight countries. Following India, the countries with the highest preterm birth rates were Pakistan, Nigeria, China, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the United States, according to the researchers. The notable prevalence of preterm births in these regions is partly attributable to their substantial population sizes, high numbers of total births, and underdeveloped healthcare systems that struggle to provide high-quality family planning, antenatal care, and childbirth services to all those in need. Globally, approximately 13.4 million babies were born prematurely in 2020, with nearly one million succumbing to complications associated with preterm birth. This data equates to roughly one in ten babies being born prematurely, before completing 37 weeks of pregnancy worldwide. Given that prematurity ranks as the leading cause of child mortality in their early years, there is an urgent need to bolster both preterm infant care and preventative measures, particularly focusing on maternal health and nutrition to enhance child survival, emphasize the authors of the study. Furthermore, preterm birth significantly increases the likelihood of major illnesses, disabilities, developmental delays, and even chronic diseases like diabetes and heart conditions in adulthood for those who survive. This study derives its estimates from data that is representative of populations and national statistics, enabling internationally comparable assessments for the year 2020. It highlighted that India had the highest incidence of preterm births in 2020, totalling 3.02 million cases, accounting for over a fifth of all preterm births worldwide. While most high preterm birth rates were observed in low and middle-income nations, rates of 10 percent or higher were also evident in high-income countries such as Greece and the United States. Within South Asia, Bangladesh reported the highest preterm birth rate in 2020 at 16.2 percent, followed by Pakistan at 14.4 percent, and India at 13.0 percent. In Latin America, the rates ranged from 5.8 percent in Nicaragua to 12.8 percent in Suriname. As birth registration and facility-based deliveries have increased, data on the prevalence of preterm births has improved. Nevertheless, there are still 92 countries lacking sufficient nationally representative data. Consequently, the authors call for sustained efforts to enhance data availability, quality, and sharing to better target support and action where it is most needed. Dr. Anshu Banerjee, Director of Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health and Ageing at WHO, emphasized the vulnerability of preterm babies to life-threatening health complications and the necessity for dedicated care and attention. He stressed the urgency of substantial investments in services supporting preterm infants and their families, as well as a heightened focus on prevention, particularly ensuring access to quality healthcare before and during pregnancies. The researchers underscored that preterm birth is not exclusive to low and middle-income countries, as the data clearly reveals its impact on families worldwide, including some high-income countries such as Greece (11.6 percent) and the United States (10 percent).

Swiggy Delivery Team in Mumbai Goes on Indefinite Strike, Demanding Pay Increase

The Swiggy unit affiliated with the Rashtriya Karamchari Sena, a workers’ union in Maharashtra, has initiated an indefinite strike. Delivery workers employed by the Bengaluru-based food delivery giant are demanding higher wages and improved working conditions. This marks the third day of the ongoing strike, during which delivery personnel have been conducting bike rallies while displaying placards outlining their demands. The strike has had a noticeable impact on food delivery services, including Swiggy’s Instamart service in Mumbai, as local residents are unable to place orders through the company’s app. The core grievance of these delivery personnel, who currently receive Rs 20 for covering a six-kilometre distance, is their struggle to make ends meet due to soaring fuel prices. They argue that they now earn only around Rs 40, a significant drop from the earlier days when they could earn Rs 100. Their compensation is based on a per-order payment system, which factors in the distance travelled for delivery, incentives, and surge pay. In May 2023, a similar strike occurred among Swiggy’s delivery personnel in Chennai. This protest arose in response to the platform’s reduction of various employee benefits, such as delivery fees, incentives, and petrol allowances. Employees were also frustrated by fines imposed for late deliveries, without any consideration for their concerns. It’s worth noting that the Chennai strike was initiated following proper notice provided to both the company and the labour department.

It’s actually a wonderful program. It’s a good platform because I think it’s time that we start looking at education and technology at a very different level. The new education policy actually looks at creating opportunities where application is involved, and technology, of course. So, I think it’s a very important event that is happening, and I think this for the next decade will set the tone for how things will happen. What is Chrysaalis I-Math India Pvt Ltd. offering for the education sector? Chrysaalis is an Early Learning Program for pre-schoolers where we develop thinking skills. Now with technology or without technology, the most important thing is thinking, right? I mean, if we don’t have the fundamentals of thinking in place, then technology cannot do much. So, what we at Chrysaalis do is we develop thinking skills in children using different concepts and maths. Where we also look at driving away the fear of maths in children. So, when children go to higher grades, they are more confident, and they are able to actually learn other subjects because, as we know, math is the mother of all subjects. So, when a child is good at maths, they automatically get good at all other subjects. So, this is what we try to do at Chrysaalis, and we are a couple of decades old, and we have trained more than 100,000 children, most of whom we are very proud to say do not fear maths and enjoy it. I mean, that is the core fundamental feature that we work with because, at the end of it, I mean, like Plato said, “I think, therefore I am.” I mean, so the point is because we think, we are. I’m very excited to be here amongst all these dignitaries, and I’m also in the role as a speaker here on the second panel, where I’m going to share my thoughts about how the pedagogy of the new age should be there and adapt to the new curriculum. So, it’s going to be a fun session. How are you implementing technology in your school? We are slowly progressing towards it because our teachers have disparities in technology savviness, and some are not. So, that disparity we are trying to reduce. We have all smart classes, and we are using interactive multimedia systems to communicate with children. I think textbooks are now outdated, so we need to supplement textbooks with more digital resources. So, we are trying to implement that also in our curriculum. How are you doing the teacher training? We’re having a lot of workshops, teacher training programs. We have introduced something which I’ll be mentioning in this event – we are having peer-to-peer mentorship as well. Somebody who already has knowledge in a particular area comes and teaches other teachers. So, we are doing that, and it’s been very successful in our school. As you can see, in this kind of forum, we bring in education leaders, EdTech players, as well as the government. How does this kind of forum benefit the education sector? Definitely, we have to keep up with the times. These forums expose us to the latest things that are available. Like LMS, which has become now an important thing for all of us to start using new technology. Only when we attend such conferences, we get to know we need to explore new options. What other people are doing, we get to know, otherwise, we are just stuck with what we are doing and we are comfortable in that. Now we see other people doing, and then we are like, “Oh yeah, this is there, and we need to upgrade our schools also.” So, it’s quite informative and inspiring. Education Minister Introduces Optional Bi-Annual Board Exams to Reduce Student Stress

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced that students will not be obligated to take class 10 and 12 board exams twice a year. The option for bi-annual exams is being introduced to alleviate the stress caused by the fear of a single opportunity. Pradhan emphasized that this choice will be entirely voluntary, with no compulsion for students to participate. He explained that students often feel pressured, thinking they missed a year or could have performed better, and the new system aims to alleviate that stress. The New Curriculum Framework (NCF), introduced by the Ministry of Education in August, intends to hold board exams twice a year to provide students with more time and opportunities to excel and retain the best score. Pradhan has received positive feedback from students regarding this initiative and aims to implement it from 2024. In response to the alarming number of student suicides in Kota, a major coaching hub in Rajasthan, Pradhan expressed concern and stated that it is a collective responsibility to ensure students are stress-free. The issue of ‘dummy schools,’ where students skip regular schooling to attend coaching classes, was also raised. Pradhan emphasized the need for serious discussions on this issue. Regarding the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), which hasn’t convened in the last three years, Pradhan mentioned that it is being reconstituted to align with the evolving education system and the new National Education Policy. Pradhan also shared that two Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Delhi and Madras, are in the process of establishing offshore campuses, with discussions ongoing with other countries interested in hosting Indian educational institutions. Guidelines for foreign universities setting up campuses in India are under consideration and will be announced soon. Pradhan addressed the objections of states like Karnataka and West Bengal to the National Education Policy (NEP), suggesting that these objections are more political than academic.
