PM Modi and Cyprus President Hold Strategic Bilateral Talks in Nicosia, Pledge Deeper India-Cyprus Ties

On his official visit to Cyprus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive bilateral talks with President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Monday. The meeting, marked by a ceremonial welcome, focused on strengthening ties across multiple domains and underlined both countries’ shared commitment to peace, security, and global cooperation. Expressing gratitude, Prime Minister Modi thanked Cyprus for its firm condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam (April 2025), highlighting the strong solidarity between the two nations in the fight against terrorism. “Cyprus’s unwavering support reflects our mutual commitment to counter-terrorism efforts,” he noted. The leaders reaffirmed their respect for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. PM Modi reiterated India’s continued backing of a unified Cyprus and called for a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus issue in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, international law, and European Union principles. The talks covered a wide spectrum of bilateral cooperation — from trade and cultural exchange to defence and digital innovation. New areas such as fintech, artificial intelligence, start-ups, and mobility were identified as future avenues for collaboration. Significantly, both sides agreed to formulate a five-year roadmap aimed at boosting strategic cooperation. Key priorities include launching maritime and cyber security dialogues and enhancing intelligence-sharing mechanisms to jointly combat terrorism, arms smuggling, and narcotics trafficking. As Cyprus prepares for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union in early 2026, the leaders committed to further advancing the India–EU relationship. They reviewed progress on the India–EU Strategic Dialogue and stressed the urgency of concluding the long-delayed Free Trade Agreement by the end of 2025. President Christodoulides assured India that Cyprus would champion the EU–India strategic partnership during its presidency, particularly in areas like green energy, defence, maritime security, and space collaboration. Both sides acknowledged the signing of the Bilateral Defence Cooperation Programme earlier in January 2025 as a key step toward deeper defence ties. They also welcomed the formation of the India-Greece-Cyprus Business and Investment Council, seen as a vital mechanism for expanding trilateral engagement. Discussions also touched on the need for improved air connectivity to boost business, tourism, and educational exchange. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the strategic significance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), calling it a transformative initiative for long-term regional prosperity. On the global stage, India and Cyprus reaffirmed their shared commitment to reforming international governance institutions. PM Modi appreciated Cyprus’s support for India’s bid for permanent membership in a restructured United Nations Security Council, noting, “The global order must evolve to reflect current realities.” The leaders also exchanged views on international developments, including ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe. To bolster cultural ties, both countries signed an MoU to set up an India Studies Chair at the University of Nicosia under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The meeting underscored a growing convergence of strategic interests between India and Cyprus, setting the tone for a more robust partnership in the years ahead. Source: DD News

NEET UG 2025 Results: No Perfect Scores as Rajasthan Student Tops with 686 Marks

In a significant shift from last year’s controversial NEET-UG results, the 2025 edition of the medical entrance exam saw no candidate achieving a perfect score of 720. This marks a stark contrast to 2024, when 67 students initially scored full marks—17 of them following a revised result—amid concerns over grace marks and incorrect NCERT references. This year, Mahesh Kumar from Rajasthan emerged as the sole national topper with a score of 686 and a percentile of 99.9999547. He was closely followed by Utkarsh Awadhiya from Madhya Pradesh, who secured the second position with a percentile of 99.9999095, according to the results declared by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on Saturday. The exam, conducted in May under heightened security measures due to last year’s controversies, saw a significant drop in the top score for the first time in several years. In fact, 686 is the lowest top score since 2019, the year NTA began administering NEET-UG. Previously, full scores were recorded in 2020, 2021, and 2023, while the highest scores in 2019 and 2022 were 701 and 715 respectively. This year’s results also brought a notable decline in cut-off marks. For the general category, the qualifying range dropped to 686–144, compared to 720–162 in 2024 and 720–137 in 2023. A total of 73 candidates scored between 651 and 686 marks. Interestingly, the NTA did not disclose individual scores of the top 50 candidates, a detail that had been publicly shared in previous years. Out of the 22.09 lakh candidates who appeared for NEET-UG 2025—lower than last year’s 23.33 lakh—12.37 lakh qualified for admission to undergraduate medical courses. Female candidates continued to dominate both in participation and qualification, making up over half of all test-takers and 58% of those who passed. State-wise, Uttar Pradesh led in the number of qualified candidates with 1.70 lakh students, followed by Maharashtra (1.25 lakh), Rajasthan (1.19 lakh), Karnataka (83,582), and Bihar (80,954). Among the top 20 rankers, Rajasthan and Delhi each contributed four candidates. In response to the 2024 exam controversy, which included a retest and a Supreme Court-mandated revision of results, the 2025 exam was held under strict vigilance. Oversight was carried out at multiple levels, including central, state, and district authorities, in line with recommendations from a government-appointed committee focused on strengthening the integrity of public examinations. The absence of full scores this year and the tighter scrutiny of the exam process may reflect a more standardized and credible testing environment going forward. Source: Indian Express

Cholera Detected in Odisha’s Jajpur as Diarrhoea Toll Rises to Five; Centre Sends Expert Teams

Odisha’s Jajpur district is grappling with a major health concern as five deaths have been reported due to a diarrhoea outbreak, with over 1,500 people affected since early May. Adding to the concern, health authorities confirmed on Saturday that multiple cases of cholera have now also been detected in the district, prompting the Central government to dispatch expert teams to assess the situation on the ground. Officials reported that out of 200 collected samples, 11 tested positive for Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium responsible for cholera. However, the infections appear to be sporadic and not concentrated in any particular locality. Responding to the health crisis, the Jajpur district administration has taken strict measures, including cancelling all Raja festival holidays for government employees from June 14 to 16. Community feasts, a common festive practice, have also been banned to curb the spread. “All district offices will remain functional, and staff may be called upon as needed,” stated the district collector’s directive. Although the number of hospital admissions has declined since Friday, the state remains on high alert. “A total of 1,516 diarrhoea cases have been admitted since May 9. Out of these, 1,306 have recovered and 210 are under treatment,” said Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, Director of Public Health. Three central teams—comprising 14 experts—have been dispatched to Jajpur. These include a seven-member medical team from the Directorate General of Health Services, a three-member food safety inspection group, and a four-member special team from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Their mandate includes assessing health risks, identifying causes, and advising both state and central authorities on effective containment and prevention strategies. Local health officials suspect that the outbreak originated from the consumption of contaminated water at community gatherings. “We’re disinfecting water sources, collecting samples from street food vendors, and even testing water from tube wells,” said Jajpur’s CDMO Dr. Bijay Mishra. Senior health officials, including NRHM Director Dr. Brunda D and Special Secretary Bijay Mohapatra, visited affected areas for an on-the-ground review. Additional CDMO Dr. Prakash Chandra Bal confirmed that one more person had died due to diarrhoea on Friday, raising the total fatalities to five. In a broader preventive push, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja has directed neighbouring districts to remain vigilant. He ordered intensified sanitation drives to be completed within 10 days and emphasized robust action against a wider set of seasonal threats like jaundice, malaria, and dengue, in addition to diarrhoea and cholera. Ahuja further instructed health officials to increase the capacity of government hospitals, ensure medicine availability, conduct household surveys, and deploy mobile health units for community awareness. The aim, he stressed, is a proactive and targeted approach to controlling the outbreak and preventing further escalation. Source: PTI

PM Modi Visits Ahmedabad Crash Site, Consoles Lone Survivor in Hospital

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Ahmedabad on Friday to personally assess the aftermath of the catastrophic Air India plane crash that claimed the lives of 241 people—marking one of the deadliest aviation tragedies in India in recent memory. Landing at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, the Prime Minister proceeded directly to the crash site in the Meghaninagar locality, accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The site, adjacent to the residential quarters of BJ Medical College, bore the devastating signs of the incident. PM Modi later visited the civil hospital to meet the sole survivor—Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British citizen of Indian origin—who is currently undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. Deeply shaken, the Prime Minister expressed his condolences on X, calling the incident “heartbreaking beyond words” and reaffirming that central authorities were coordinating efforts to assist victims and their families. On Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu had visited the crash site. Minister Kinjarapu confirmed that a high-level committee has been set up to investigate the cause of the crash. The tragic incident unfolded moments after Air India Flight AI 171 took off from Ahmedabad around 1:30 PM, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport. According to air traffic control reports, the pilot issued a ‘Mayday’ call shortly after takeoff, indicating a grave emergency. The aircraft rapidly lost altitude before crashing into the doctors’ residential compound at BJ Medical College and bursting into flames, sending thick plumes of smoke across the city skyline. Aviation experts suggest possible causes could include simultaneous engine thrust failure or a major bird strike, although official findings are awaited. Graphic visuals from the crash site showed emergency responders pulling bodies from the wreckage, and dozens of injured being rushed to the nearby hospital. Tragically, five medical students residing in the impacted area were also among the deceased. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a seasoned pilot with over 8,200 flight hours, alongside First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 hours. Air India confirmed the death toll at 241, with passengers including 169 Indian nationals, 53 from the UK, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian citizen. Only one passenger—Vishwash Kumar Ramesh—survived the crash. Source: NDTV

Google Introduces Voluntary Buyouts Amid Ongoing Cost-Cutting Measures

Ardorcomm news

In its continued efforts to streamline operations, Google has initiated a new round of voluntary buyouts for employees across multiple departments, including search, advertising, research, and engineering, according to both company sources and media reports. Although the exact number of employees affected remains undisclosed, this move marks an expansion of a voluntary exit program that was previously rolled out to certain U.S.-based teams earlier this year. Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini confirmed that additional teams have now joined the initiative, which includes severance packages aimed at supporting the company’s strategic priorities going forward. In a related development, the tech giant is also encouraging remote employees living near Google offices to transition to a hybrid work model. “This is part of our ongoing effort to foster more in-person collaboration,” Mencini noted. The latest restructuring step follows Google’s larger workforce reduction in 2023, when the company laid off approximately 12,000 employees in response to declining demand for online services post-pandemic. India Plans to Standardise AC Temperature Settings to Curb Power Demand

In a major move aimed at improving energy efficiency, the Indian government is in talks with air conditioner and appliance manufacturers to implement a standardised cooling range across all air conditioning systems. According to a Bloomberg report published on 10 June 2025, the Union Ministry of Power is working towards enforcing a minimum AC temperature limit of 20°C, with the maximum set at 28°C. This proposed regulation will apply to air conditioners installed in homes, hotels, and vehicles alike. Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, in a recent press briefing, confirmed that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to manage soaring electricity consumption, especially during the intense summer months when demand peaks. The country’s electricity usage has been outpacing generation capacity, leading to power shortages in several regions during the April-June summer period. The move to fix AC temperature ranges is expected to bring considerable relief. Officials estimate that such a shift could reduce peak power demand by approximately 3 gigawatts. With over 100 million AC units currently in use across India and an additional 15 million being added each year, even a slight tweak in cooling settings could result in massive energy savings. Citing a University of California, Berkeley study, the government noted that standardising cooling temperatures could lead to a potential saving of ₹7.5 lakh crore by 2035 in terms of new power generation and grid infrastructure investments. It could also help cut down peak power requirements by up to 60 gigawatts over the next decade. Despite rising demand—India’s power needs touched 250 gigawatts last year and are projected to grow by 8% in 2025—the government claims it is fully equipped to handle peak loads, thanks in part to timely rains this year that moderated power consumption. However, with heatwaves returning in June, AC usage is again surging. Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal highlighted the significant impact of cooling settings on electricity use. He noted that some AC units can be set as low as 16°C, contributing to excessive energy draw. He added that every one-degree increase in thermostat temperature can cut AC power consumption by around 6%, underscoring the importance of temperature moderation in controlling the overall load. As the proposal takes shape, India is gearing up to take a significant step toward long-term energy sustainability while addressing immediate power demands. Source: Bloomberg

Andhra Pradesh Govt Approves 10-Hour Workday Amid Widespread Protests

Ardorcomm news

In a controversial move, the Andhra Pradesh government, led by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), has given the green light to increase the standard workday from nine to ten hours across all private industries and factories. The decision, part of the state’s broader strategy to boost industrial growth and improve its Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) credentials, has sparked strong opposition from workers’ unions and political critics. Previously, the legal daily work limit in the state stood at eight hours before being increased to nine nearly a decade ago. The new amendment, which has been cleared by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s cabinet, now pushes that limit further, raising concerns about worker exploitation and fatigue. Information and Public Relations Minister K. Pardhasaradhi defended the move, stating that easing labour regulations would make Andhra Pradesh more attractive to investors and manufacturers. However, unions and opposition leaders have condemned the changes. V. Srinivasa Rao, State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), criticized the decision, alleging that it was made under pressure from the central government to cater to corporate interests. “These amendments strip workers of their rights and reduce them to the status of modern-day slaves,” he said. Rao also highlighted the unfortunate timing of the decision, coming just weeks ahead of a nationwide labour strike on July 9 protesting such reforms. The Andhra Pradesh Factories Act previously restricted adult workers to a nine-hour day, with a mandatory 30-minute break after five hours of continuous work. Unions fear the new policy may allow factory management to unofficially stretch shifts beyond ten hours, possibly to 12 or more, under the guise of extended scheduling. Additional amendments include major changes to overtime and night shift regulations. Overtime eligibility has now been revised upward, from 75 to 144 hours, meaning workers will receive extra pay only after crossing this higher threshold. The government has also lifted restrictions on night shifts for women, with the provision of an extra paid holiday now left to the employer’s discretion rather than being a guaranteed benefit. Critics argue that these changes not only reduce worker protections but also jeopardize their health and wellbeing. “Pushing people to work beyond eight hours a day can have serious consequences on physical and mental health,” warned Dr. T. Seva Kumar, a general physician. As public backlash intensifies, the government’s attempt to court industrial investment is being met with growing resistance from labour organizations and civil society, who see the move as a step backward for workers’ rights.
