The NEP and Digitalization: Driving India’s Education Revolution

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 represents a significant reform in India’s educational landscape, aiming to transform the system into a more holistic, flexible, and inclusive framework. With the rapid advancement of technology and the increasing importance of digital literacy, NEP 2020 integrates digitalization as a core component of educational reform, setting the stage for an educational revolution in India. Overview of NEP 2020 Approved by the Union Cabinet on July 29, 2020, NEP 2020 replaces the National Policy on Education of 1986. It aims to create an education system that is rooted in Indian ethos while also preparing students for global challenges. The policy is built on five pillars: Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability, and Accountability. These principles are designed to ensure that every child receives a high-quality education, thereby transforming India into a global knowledge superpower. Key Features of NEP 2020 New Academic Structure: The traditional 10+2 schooling system will transition to a new 5+3+3+4 structure, which aligns with the developmental stages of children. Multilingual Education: Emphasis is placed on teaching in the mother tongue until Class 5, promoting linguistic diversity while ensuring quality education. Holistic and Multidisciplinary Learning: NEP encourages students to explore various subjects beyond rigid disciplinary boundaries, fostering critical thinking and creativity. Integration of Technology: The policy highlights the importance of digital literacy and the use of technology in classrooms to enhance learning outcomes. The Role of Digitalization in Education Digitalization is pivotal in achieving the objectives set forth by NEP 2020. The integration of technology into education can enhance accessibility and quality while preparing students for a digital economy. Here are some ways digitalization is driving this transformation: Enhanced Learning Platforms The rise of online learning platforms has made education more accessible to students across various socio-economic backgrounds. During the COVID-19 pandemic, institutions rapidly adopted online teaching methods, which demonstrated the potential for digital platforms to deliver quality education remotely. NEP 2020 advocates for expanding these digital learning resources to ensure continuity in education. Teacher Training and Professional Development NEP emphasizes continuous professional development for teachers through digital means. Online training modules can equip educators with modern teaching strategies and technological tools necessary for effective instruction. This approach not only enhances teacher capabilities but also directly impacts student learning outcomes. Data-Driven Decision Making Digitalization enables educational institutions to collect and analyze data effectively. By leveraging data analytics, schools can identify learning gaps, monitor student progress, and tailor interventions accordingly. This evidence-based approach supports personalized learning experiences and improves overall educational quality. Challenges in Implementation While NEP 2020 presents a robust framework for educational reform, its success hinges on effective implementation. Some challenges include: Infrastructure Gaps: Many rural areas still lack reliable internet access and technological infrastructure, hindering the full realization of digital education. Resistance to Change: Traditional mindsets among educators and institutions may pose barriers to adopting new teaching methodologies and technologies. Equity Concerns: Ensuring equitable access to digital resources remains a significant challenge, especially for marginalized communities. Future Prospects The successful integration of digitalization within the framework of NEP 2020 could lead to transformative changes in India’s education system. By focusing on inclusivity and accessibility, India can harness technology to create a more equitable educational landscape. Goals for 2030 NEP aims to achieve a Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of 100% from preschool to secondary level by 2030 and increase GER in higher education from 26.3% (2018) to 50% by 2035. Achieving these goals will require concerted efforts from government bodies, educational institutions, and communities. The National Education Policy 2020, coupled with the power of digitalization, holds immense potential to revolutionize India’s educational framework. By embracing technology and fostering an inclusive approach, India can pave the way for a brighter future where quality education is accessible to all, ultimately contributing to national development and global competitiveness. In summary, NEP 2020 is not just an educational reform; it is a comprehensive strategy aimed at transforming India’s youth into skilled professionals ready to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. As we move forward, embracing digitalization will be crucial in realizing this vision.

Byju’s Seeks Fresh Funds, Slashes Valuation by 90% to Tackle Financial Woes

Indian education giant Byju’s is reportedly planning to raise funds through a share issuance next month, seeking over $100 million from existing investors. The catch, however, is that the valuation of the once $22 billion startup will plummet by more than 90%, now placing the company at less than $2 billion. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Byju’s founder, Byju Raveendran, will partake in the share sale to maintain his stake in the company. The move comes as Byju’s grapples with financial challenges, planning to utilize the proceeds to settle outstanding payments to vendors and stabilize its operations. Byju’s had previously attained a valuation of $22 billion during its funding round in late 2022, marking a significant decline in its perceived value. The company has been navigating a cash crunch for several months and is concurrently engaged in a legal dispute with creditors over a missed interest payment on a $1.2 billion term loan. In a bid to alleviate financial pressures, Byju’s is set to sell its US-based kids’ digital reading platform for approximately $400 million. The spokesperson for the company has declined to comment on the recent developments. Post the share sale, Byju’s aims to refocus on its core business and intensify efforts in the realm of generative artificial intelligence for hyper-personalized learning. Backed by prominent investors like the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, General Atlantic, and Prosus NV, Byju’s had previously embarked on a global acquisition spree before encountering the challenges of a tech funding downturn. Noteworthy participants in the upcoming share sale include existing shareholders, such as the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, General Atlantic, and Prosus NV. Byju’s endeavors to rebuild its business amid the financial restructuring, emphasizing innovation in education technology. The company’s proactive measures highlight the resilience of Byju’s leadership in adapting to market dynamics while ensuring a sustainable future for the prominent education technology firm.

Abhay G. Chebbi, Pro Chancellor, Alliance University, Highlights Significance of Skill Development and Technology Integration in Education

“We must create an environment that fosters skill absorption and includes innovative assessments that cannot be manipulated,” says Abhay G. Chebbi, Pro Chancellor, Alliance University, in an interview with Pratik Ghosh, Content Writer, ArdorComm Media at the ‘New Normal – Education Leadership Summit & Awards 2023’ #ELSABengaluru #ELSAKarnataka How are you feeling to witness this New Normal Education Leadership Summit and Awards in Bengaluru? I think this is a much-called-for event, and many such events must happen in today’s day and age, especially in Bangalore. Calling it the “new normal” in Bangalore may not be entirely accurate, as Bangalore is in the lap of Silicon Valley in the East. Increasingly, technological developments are happening here, with tech and fintech firms and great educational institutions in the K12 and higher education sectors. The adoption of technology and the harmonious marriage of physical and digital is very apparent in Bangalore, making it an example for creative initiatives by schools, universities, and colleges in the educational ecosystem. So, this event is much called for, and I’m eager to listen to the other panellists. Could you highlight some initiatives that you are taking under your leadership at your university? At Alliance University we have begun this marriage between physical and digital much before and of course came the advent of covid 19, the pandemic in a way forced every stakeholder to sort of adopt into this environment more rapidly having said that use of technology is not new to our university. Just to give you an example quoting covid for example, we were recognized globally as one of the most engaging universities in collaboration with a leading online skill-based course provider. We competed with international universities and set this as a new normal. Our ecosystem, from student registration to classes and collaboration, heavily involves technology. What’s your take on skill development for students? In today’s world, skilling and upskilling are constant needs. Skills come in various forms, from domain-specific skills to interpersonal and industry-specific skills. Students learn skills at their own pace, anywhere, and at any time. However, we must create an environment that fosters skill absorption and includes innovative assessments that cannot be manipulated. Skills are evolving rapidly, and students must adapt to this constant change. In forums like this, where education leaders, EdTech players, and government representatives come together, how do these forums benefit the education sector at large? These forums serve as platforms for ideation, bringing together thought leaders from government, industry, and enablers. They also attract students who can benefit from these discussions. These forums allow for engaging, pertinent discussions, highlighting challenges and opportunities. Collaboration and networking are key outcomes of such events. ArdorComm Media Group has recently completed 2 years of its existence, any wishes or message for us? I wish that more such companies come, I wish for your company to grow many folds because this is an area where collaborators have to play a very important role and these bridges that are created need to be fostered so all the best.

Dr. Mahesh KM, Principal, JGI, SBM Jain Evening College, Shares his Experience of Attending New Normal ELSA Bengaluru

“This platform is bringing together everything that is required for our society,” says Dr. Mahesh KM, Principal, JGI, SBM Jain Evening College, in an interview with Pratik Ghosh, Content Writer, ArdorComm Media at the ‘New Normal – Education Leadership Summit & Awards 2023’ #ELSABengaluru #ELSAKarnataka How are you feeling to witness the New Normal Education Leadership Summit and Awards in Bengaluru? This is my second experience in this particular Summit. When they started after COVID-19, there were a lot of changes and real experiences. They are addressing what the society and the present generation require when it comes to educational institutions. What teachers, education institutions, and students require – they’re bringing all these aspects together on one platform to emphasize the growth of both institutions and students. When institutions grow, they require a lot of changes. For example, LinkedIn and the Jain Group of institutions have partnered up. Our chairman has tied up with LinkedIn to offer courses as internal assessments for our students. This platform is bringing together everything that is required for our society. As you know, in forums like this, we bring in educational leaders, EdTech players, and government representatives. How does this kind of forum benefit the education sector? The education sector is going through a lot of changes. For example, in the admission process, we require automation. This platform provides insights into the software needed for the admission process. It also covers aspects related to the assessment process, such as digital courses, or any other platform that relates to admissions. This platform is vital for addressing the evolving needs of the education sector. ArdorComm Media Group has recently completed 2 years of its existence, any messages or wishes for them? I want to congratulate the entire team at ArdorComm. I’ve experienced their growth from the first anniversary to now. They are doing great work both at an international and state level. My best wishes are always with ArdorComm. Congratulations and God bless the entire team and the founder behind it.

Dr. Sami Ulla, CEO of Manipal Group of Schools, Shares Insights on the Future of Education at New Normal Leadership Summit

“We are completely technology-enabled. We have hybrid and blended teaching and learning techniques,” says Dr. Sami Ulla, CEO of Manipal Group of Schools, in an interview with Pratik Ghosh, Content Writer, ArdorComm Media at the ‘New Normal – Education Leadership Summit & Awards 2023’ #ELSABengaluru #ELSAKarnataka How are you feeling to witness the New Normal Education Leadership Summit and Awards in Bengaluru? Oh, it’s amazing. I’m attending for the first time, but it’s organized well. Beautiful atmosphere, and I think the entire industry fraternity, both from K-12 and higher education, we could get to see here. It was very thought-provoking sessions, and we get to know and learn many things from this. I’m really very grateful to ArdorComm Media for organizing this and having me here. Thank you so much. As you know, the theme of our event is “New Normal Karnataka.” What’s your take on this? See, luckily for us, Bangalore is a very IT-savvy city compared to all other cities in the country, and a large number of educational institutions have implemented technology. But again, as we had the session, the rural areas are pretty missed out for this implementation, either be the end-user devices, network, or the content. So, they are pretty left behind. I wish Karnataka, as a state, takes up this, and the country as such also. Technology is the future, and our students have to be digitally competent to face the future. How are you implementing these new age technologies in your institution? We are completely technology-enabled. We have hybrid and blended teaching and learning techniques. Much of the activities happen in the school, and the remedial part, the regular assessments, and the external engagement happen outside the campus. So, we have made sure that we use all the tools, either Google-sponsored tools or Apple or Microsoft. We have implemented the best tools of these companies. ArdorComm Media Group has recently completed two years of its existence, any message or wishes for us? Wonderful! Congratulations for coming into this space. I think it’s a win-win situation for the education industry and perhaps for the Media as such. I congratulate and wish you all the luck and keep having such programs where educationists can come and learn many things from these kinds of events. Thanks for organizing this.

Dr. Puttaraju, Vice Chancellor, Mandya University, Shares his Views on New Normal Karnataka

“I think higher education in the country, particularly through Karnataka and Bangalore, is doing a really fantastic job,” says Dr. Puttaraju, Vice Chancellor, Mandya University, in an interview with Pratik Ghosh, Content Writer, ArdorComm Media at the ‘New Normal – Education Leadership Summit & Awards 2023’ #ELSABengaluru #ELSAKarnataka How are you feeling to witness the New Normal Education Leadership Summit and Awards in Bengaluru? I’m really happy to be part of this New Normal Education Summit in Karnataka, and the effort made by ArdorComm in bringing these different people who are really experienced in this education together today and having a meaningful interaction section is really appreciable. We usually think in silos, you know. I being in the education system for the last 35 years, and unless I interact with my peers, it is not possible to come out with meaningful solutions to the Indian higher education issues. In this direction, I’m really happy to congratulate and compliment ArdorComm Media for having made a good effort and bringing all the people here. From morning till evening, we have a couple of sessions and a lot of interactions. I hope we all come together and meet the aspirations of the country through different people. And as I said, our experience should be integrated in a very meaningful way and see that higher education in this country is recognized everywhere and worldwide. I sincerely thank you all and thank ArdorComm Media for this great opportunity. As you know, the theme of our event is New Normal Karnataka, and Karnataka is an education hub. So, what’s your take on this? In fact, the entire India, if you compare, Bangalore is known for its higher education quality. Not only in Karnataka, not only in India, the entire world, people usually refer to Bangalore as a place for higher education. I think unmatched quality education is there. It is not because of the students; it is because of the culture and ecosystem created by everybody. Not necessarily education institutions, even people like ArdorComm and everybody are coming into this platform to spread the message about education. I think higher education in the country, particularly through Karnataka and Bangalore, is doing a really fantastic job. As you can see, in this kind of forums, we bring in education leaders, the EdTech players, as well as representation from the government. So, how does this kind of forum benefit the education sector? In fact, when we get to exchange our ideas, for example, I interact with a couple of people, and I came to know that after 35 years of experience, there are a lot of solutions available to our problems. We keep on dwelling on our problems, thinking for the solutions, and that is the domain for somebody else, and somebody else is there to give the solutions. And this platform definitely brings in all these problems and solutions together. Now, I know that there are a couple of solutions to my problems, and definitely this platform and this collaboration will help us to understand each other much better, and we can give very quality education to our students and the country. ArdorComm Media Group has recently completed 2 years of its existence, any message or wishes for us? I’m really happy, within two years, you are making so much noise. I think by the time you complete a decade, 10 years, your presence will be felt by everybody. I hope you continue your services like this and help us bring in different people, including meritorious students and staff members, along with the administrators, so that there is meaningful interaction happening there. I wish ArdorComm Media a grand future in the years to come and hope it will do some service to society through these meaningful interactions.
