IIT Mandi Study Reveals Alarming Health Risks from Traditional Cooking Practices that Use Biomass Fuel in Northeast Indian States

Mandi, 19th February 2024: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi), in collaboration with Institut National de Recherche et de Sécurité (INRS), France, and the National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL), India, have conducted a comprehensive study on the detrimental effects of indoor air pollution resulting from traditional cooking practices in rural kitchens across three Northeast Indian states. In a series of three papers, a research team from IIT Mandi comprising of Mr. Bijay Sharma, Ph.D. scholar, and Dr. Sayantan Sarkar, Assistant Professor, School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and his collaborators analyzed the extent and consequences of harmful emissions produced during indoor cooking using firewood and mixed biomass. Despite advancements, more than 50% of the rural population in Northeastern India (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya) continues to use traditional solid fuels such as firewood and mixed biomass for cooking, leading to the release of significant pollutants into the kitchen air. The research aimed to gauge the severity and disease burden associated with the use of biomass cooking fuel compared to LPG-based cooking. The researchers measured size-resolved concentrations of aerosols, i.e., particles suspended in the air, and toxic trace metals and carcinogenic organic substances bound with it, during cooking with firewood, mixed biomass, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas. They modeled the deposition patterns of these particles and associated chemicals in various sections of the human respiratory system. The resulting inhalation exposure to these chemicals during cooking was then calculated. Utilizing this data, the researchers estimated the health impact (disease burden) on the rural NE Indian population, focusing on respiratory diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Pneumonia, and various cancers, using the ‘Potential Years of Life Lost’ (PYLL) metric. This metric estimates the potential number of years lost in a population due to premature death from ill health. The study revealed that exposure to harmful aerosols in firewood/biomass-using kitchens was 2-19 times higher than in LPG-using kitchens, with respiratory deposition ranging from 29 to 79% of the total aerosol concentration. The fraction of population using firewood and mixed biomass faced 2-57 times higher disease burdens than LPG users. Furthermore, the research found that the potential for oxidative stress, which leads to damaged cells, proteins, and DNA, was likely to be 4-5 times higher among people using biomass in kitchens than those using LPG. This stress is driven by the inhalation of metals and organic chemicals produced during indoor cooking using biomass fuel. Highlighting the uniqueness of this research, Dr. Sayantan Sarkar, Assistant Professor, School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, IIT Mandi, said, “Our study combines real-world aerosol measurements in rural kitchens with dosimetry modeling to robustly estimate the impact of cooking emissions on the respiratory tract. It is the first effort to estimate disease burdens caused by exposure to indoor cooking emissions in India in terms of potential years of life lost. The study also measures for the first time the potential for oxidative stress resulting from such exposure in the Indian context, and quantifies the additional risk that biomass users face compared to those who use the cleaner alternative LPG.” This research holds practical implications, emphasizing the urgent need for rural communities in Northeast India to transition to cleaner cooking methods. Recommendations include making LPG more accessible, improving cookstove programs, spreading awareness in rural areas, funding local solutions, and organizing health camps for rural women. The three studies have been published in two journals – Science of the Total Environment and Environmental Pollution and are accessible through the following links: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2023.167163 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2023.123246 http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2023.162539

Chhattisgarh Government Reinstates E-Permits for Coal Transportation, Ending Controversial Manual System

The Chhattisgarh government has announced the reinstatement of e-permits for coal transportation, marking the end of a controversial manual system that had resulted in extortions and legal troubles for officials. This decision comes following the revelation of irregularities and corruption in the previous manual process. Under the previous Congress regime, changes were made to the clearance norms for coal transportation, which led to the implementation of a manual system for issuing no-objection certificates (NOC) for coal transportation. However, the lack of a proper procedure for this manual system created loopholes that were exploited for corrupt practices. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai addressed the Assembly, highlighting the drawbacks of the offline process, including delays and corrupt practices. He emphasized that the restoration of e-permits will streamline coal transportation, benefiting both the industry and the government. The manual system had facilitated extortion of illegal coal levy, with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) estimating the scam to be over Rs 450 crore. The ED’s investigation revealed the involvement of senior bureaucrats, businessmen, politicians, and middlemen in the extortion racket. Thirty-five individuals, including sitting legislator Devendra Yadav, suspended IAS officers Sameer Bishnoi and Ranu Sahu, and other prominent figures, have been named as accused in the coal levy scam. The majority of the accused, including the two IAS officers, have been arrested, underlining the severity of the corruption allegations. Chhattisgarh, being a significant coal-producing state, recorded substantial coal output last year, further emphasizing the importance of ensuring transparent and efficient transportation processes. The reinstatement of e-permits is expected to not only expedite coal transportation but also curb corrupt practices, thereby fostering a more conducive environment for both the coal industry and the state’s governance.

Reliance Industries and Walt Disney Near Finalization of Mega Merger, Creating India’s Largest Media Entity

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), led by Mukesh Ambani, and Walt Disney are on the brink of finalizing a significant stock-and-cash merger, aiming to forge India’s largest media and entertainment conglomerate, according to a report by Economic Times (ET). The negotiations, under an exclusivity period, are slated to conclude by February 17. With an anticipated ownership stake of 42-45% in the merged entity, Viacom18 is poised to emerge as the leading shareholder. RIL plans to infuse up to $1.5 billion in cash into the new venture, securing a direct stake. The conglomerate as a whole is slated to retain a 60% ownership interest, while Walt Disney will possess the remaining 40%. According to sources cited by ET, Reliance executives are currently devising a comprehensive three-year capital allocation strategy encompassing all business sectors, with the media segment earmarked as pivotal for the company’s growth trajectory. The proposed strategy entails the establishment of a subsidiary of Viacom18 Media, which will subsequently merge with Star India through a stock swap. Both entities are assessed to be of comparable value, ranging between $4-5 billion each, with RIL leveraging cash to acquire a controlling interest. As part of the deal, Jio Cinema, a division of Viacom18, will be seamlessly integrated. However, Disney’s valuation of its India operations has witnessed a significant decline since its 2019 acquisition, primarily attributable to mounting losses incurred by its sports franchise in the country, as highlighted by analysts. Viacom18’s entertainment network in India represents a collaboration between Ambani’s TV18 Broadcast, Paramount Global, and Bodhi Tree Systems, an investment fund established by James Murdoch and former Disney India chief Uday Shankar. Contrary to some reports, Bodhi Tree will indirectly hold shares in the new entity as a Viacom18 stakeholder. As negotiations approach a climax, the merger’s diligence is being diligently conducted by leading firms from both sides, accompanied by multiple law firms and company executives. While the deadline for exclusivity may be extended, the concerted effort is geared toward finalizing the deal by the fiscal year-end, reflecting the dynamic nature of the Indian media landscape and the imperative for consolidation. The forthcoming entity’s board is slated to feature three Disney representatives among its eight or nine members, underscoring the collaborative nature of the venture.

PM Modi Claims BJP Govt Generated 1.5 Times More Jobs Than Predecessor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that his government has created 1.5 times more employment opportunities in its tenure compared to the preceding administration’s 10 years. Speaking at a Rozgar Mela program where over one lakh youngsters received recruitment letters for government jobs via video conference, Modi criticized the former government for prolonged recruitment processes, which he argued fostered corruption. Modi highlighted his government’s commitment to transparency and expeditious recruitment procedures, aiming to provide equal opportunities for all based on merit and hard work. He emphasized the belief among young Indians that they can secure positions within the government system through talent and dedication. The prime minister pointed to initiatives such as the rooftop solar power scheme for one crore homes and substantial investments in infrastructure as significant contributors to job creation. India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem, with over 1.25 lakh startups, was also lauded by Modi for generating employment across the country, even in smaller cities. Additionally, Modi outlined government support for startups, including tax rebates and a Rs 1 lakh crore fund for research and innovation, aiming to further stimulate job growth. Critiquing previous administrations for neglecting the railway sector and failing to meet public expectations, Modi underscored ongoing transformations in the industry. He inaugurated the phase I foundation stone of the integrated complex “Karmayogi Bhavan,” aimed at fostering collaboration and synergy among various components of ‘Mission Karmayogi.’ The newly recruited individuals will join various ministries and departments, marking a step forward in the government’s efforts to address unemployment and promote inclusive growth.
