Maharashtra govt says ‘Molnupiravir’ must be used with caution to treat Covid-19 patients

The Maharashtra government on Monday issued a letter to the district, civic administrations and health departments in the state asking them to use oral anti-viral drug ‘Molnupiravir’ for treatment of symptomatic, adult COVID-19 patients with “abundant caution and in certain conditions”. Dr Pradeep Vyas, Additional Chief Secretary (Health), in the letter, requested district and civic authorities to use Molnupiravir with “abundant caution and in certain conditions and in full advised dose”. He said this drug has received emergency use authorization (from the Drug Controller General of India) and based on the opinion of some experts it has also been included in treatment protocol circulated on January 6, 2022, in the state subject to certain conditions. “Subsequently, certain state governments like Odisha have withdrawn this drug from the market. ICMR has also not recommended its use in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection (which causes COVID-19). Molnupiravir has not been included in the Standard Treatment Protocol released by the Government of India on January 17, 2022,” Dr Vyas said in the letter. Molnupiravir has been shown to reduce hospitalization in a clinical trial and thus has received emergency use authorization, not an FDA approval, the letter stated. Source: CNBC

Legendary Kathak Dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj passes away at 83

Padma Vibhushan awardee Pandit Birju Maharaj, who took the traditional Indian dance form to the world, left for his heavenly abode on Monday. The legendary Kathak dancer passed away at the age of 83 in Delhi after suffering a heart attack. As soon as the news of his death was shared on his social media platform by his granddaughter Ragini Maharaj, several Bollywood celebrities and his fans mourned the loss. Maharaj-ji, as he was popularly known, died surrounded by his family and disciples. His granddaughter Ragini Maharaj told PTI, “He was with us when this happened. He had his dinner and we were playing antakshari because he loved old music. He was lying down and suddenly his breathing became uneven. We think it was cardiac arrest as he was also a heart patient. This happened between 12.15 and 12.30 am. It must have been just a minute or so. We rushed to the hospital but unfortunately, we could not save him. He died before reaching the hospital.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his death is an “irreparable loss” to the entire art world. “Deeply saddened by the demise of Pandit Birju Maharaj ji, who gave Indian dance a special recognition world over. His passing is an irreparable loss to the entire art world. My condolences to his family and fans in this hour of grief,” the prime minister said. Actor-politician Hema Malini was one of the firsts to pay tribute to the late dancer. “The nation mourns the passing of a true legend, Shri Birju Maharaj, Kathak exponent par excellence. His ghungroos were on his ankles till he breathed his last. I always admired and respected him as a giant of the medium of Kathak & will miss his presence on the firmament of dance,” the actor, who herself is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer, shared on Twitter. Madhuri Dixit, who collaborated with him in three films wrote, “He was a legend but had a child like innocence. He was my guru but also my friend. He taught me the intricacies of dance and Abhinay but never failed to make me laugh at his funny anecdotes.” Kamal Haasan shared a throwback picture of himself when he was trained by the legendary Birju Maharaj. He called him “the unparalleled dancer.” Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan shared a throwback picture with Birju Maharaj. He said his passing away “marks the end of an era for Indian dance and Kathak.” “For me it’s been a personal loss. He was loved immensely by my family and his memories live in our hearts forever. The heavens will dance for him today and everyday,” he shared. Choreographer-turned-filmmaker Farah Khan was also among the firsts to react to Maharaj’s passing away. “The world loses a genuine stalwart,” she mentioned via Twitter. Source: PTI

Republic Day Celebration to begin every year from Subhash Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary on January 23

The Republic Day celebrations will now begin every year from January 23 instead of January 24 to include the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Subash Chandra Bose, government sources said on January 15. This is in line with the Narendra Modi government’s focus on commemorating important aspects of India’s history and culture, they said, noting it had earlier started celebrating Bose’s birth anniversary as “Parakram Divas”. Other such days, observance of which have become a yearly affair, are August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, October 31 as National Unity Day (birth anniversary of Sardar Patel), November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas (Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary), November 26 as Constitution Day and December 26 as Veer Baal Divas (a tribute to the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh), sources added. The Centre has drawn up plans to promote sites across the country associated with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Last year, in October, news agency PTI had reported that the Tourism Ministry was planning curated tours as part of events to commemorate the anniversary of the formation of the Azad Hind government, the provisional government that was announced by Bose on October 21, 1943. “Identification of such sites has been done and will include multiple routes. We have prepared curated itineraries that cover destinations connected to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The itineraries will be given to tour operators to promote sites related to Netaji,” an official was quoted as saying by PTI. Source: PTI

“Just 15% Of Hospital Beds Occupied”, Cases To Dip Today: Delhi Minister

Delhi is expected to record fewer than 25,000 Covid cases today – less than the nearly 30,000 reported yesterday – Health Minister Satyendra Jain said late last night. Mr Jain also told reporters only 15 per cent of available hospital beds were occupied and that admissions had slowed. “This is an indication that the wave has plateaued,” the Health Minister said, confirming that there are no plans to impose new curbs ahead of the weekend curfew that will kick in at 10 pm. “Last night, Delhi reported 28,867 new cases, 31 fatalities… but over 13,000 hospital beds are vacant, just over 15 per cent of beds are occupied. We are expecting the city will report around 25,000 new COVID-19 cases today,” Mr Jain was quoted by news agency PTI. “Hospital admissions in the city have become stagnant… which is a good sign. The positivity rate keeps on changing but the main factor is hospital admissions,” he added. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal this morning said, “There is no need to panic. Cases have risen but hospitalisation and deaths are low. We have made all preparations. There is no shortage of beds.” On Thursday the national capital reported a record 28,867 cases in 24 hours – the most in a day since the pandemic began in December 2019. Yesterday’s positivity rate – 29 per cent – was also the highest since May 3 last year, when the country was battling the second wave of infections. The number of Covid containment zones in the city saw a massive 17-fold increase this month, PTI reported, rising from 1,243 on January 1 to 20,878 on January 12. The PM’s message comes amid a massive spike in cases across the country triggered, in part, by the spread of the Omicron strain, which is much more transmissible than the Delta variant. “We have to stay alert, but we also need to be aware that there’s no need to panic. We have to be careful amid this festive season,” he said, underlining the need to also keep the economy running. This morning the country reported over 2.64 lakh new cases in 24 hours – a 6.7 per cent increase from the day before. The number of confirmed Omicron cases increased by 4.83 per cent to 5,753. Spotify lays off staff, shuts down podcast studio

Swedish music streaming giant Spotify has shut down its podcast studio and laid off some members of the team, the media reported. It has laid off members of its Studio 4 team, popularly known as Spotify Studios. For the team of 10 to 15 along with the studio director — who were the brains behind shows such as Dissect and Chapo: Kingpin on Trial, according to a report, Spotify called them and said their last day would be January 21. The laid off employees will receive two months’ salary as severance pay. Some of the employees were reassigned work, whereas the rest were asked to register with the Spotify job board. The Swedish music streaming company is in the process of trying to become more agile and achieve faster and more significant progress. It is not very clear whether the team was dissolved because of their less than satisfactory performance. The firm had invested heavily on podcasting, adding thousands of shows in the third quarter of 2021. In an internal note, Julie McNamara, head of US studios and video, acknowledged the layoffs, according to the report. She said that shutting the studio down would enable the company to “move faster and make more significant progress and facilitate more effective collaboration across our organisation.” The team’s most recently produced programming are ‘Nosy Neighbors’, ‘We Said What We Said,’ and ‘Dope Labs’.
