Research found that laser treatment could aid in the prevention of non-melanoma skin cancer

Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, jointly known as keratinocyte carcinoma and the most prevalent types of cancer diagnosed in the United States, are likely to be preventable with simple laser skin treatments, according to new research. The work was undertaken by a team of researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital, a founding member of Mass General Brigham. It provides an approach to safeguarding people’s skin health that is simple to execute and was published in Dermatologic Surgery. In contrast to ablative fractional lasers, which remove the top layer of skin after treatment, nonablative fractional lasers (NAFL) deliver heat in a fractional manner, leaving the skin completely intact after treatment. They are currently used to treat scars, age spots, sun-damaged skin, and other conditions; however, it is unknown whether or not they are effective at preventing skin damage. The Mass General Dermatology Laser & Cosmetic Center’s Mathew Avram, MD, JD, and his team looked at patients who had previously undergone successful treatment for facial keratinocyte carcinoma as a way to learn more. After 3 years, these patients have a 35% chance of developing a second keratinocyte carcinoma, and in 5 years, they have a 50% chance. In the study, 52 patients served as controls and did not get NAFL therapy, whereas 43 patients received this treatment. Over an average follow-up of more than 6 years, the rate of subsequent facial keratinocyte carcinoma development was 20.9% in patients treated with NAFL and 40.4% in controls, showing that patients receiving NAFL had about a 50% lower risk. Control patients had a 2.65-times higher risk of developing a new facial keratinocyte carcinoma than NAFL-treated patients, even after accounting for age, gender, and skin type. Moreover, in patients treated with NAFL compared to untreated patients, the time to development of a face keratinocyte carcinoma was noticeably longer. According to Avram, “These findings suggest that NAFL treatment may have an important role in protecting against subsequent keratinocyte carcinomas.”  While the exact mechanism underlying NAFL’s protective action is unknown, it is hypothesised that the drug reduces the overall number of photodamaged keratinocytes while also possibly promoting a wound healing response, which favours healthy skin cells. Avram pointed out that more research is necessary to more thoroughly evaluate NAFL’s contribution to the prevention of skin cancer, to show how long its preventive effects last, and to establish the ideal treatment parameters. According to this research, patients are advised to undergo nonablative laser treatments if they are at risk or detect anomalies in order to help avoid skin cancer. Also, it’s crucial to take the right precautions to lower your chance of developing skin cancer, such as wearing sunscreen every day, wearing helmets and other sun-protective gear, and performing self-skin examinations.

Musk fired an additional 10% of Twitter’s staff in the most recent wave of layoffs

According to a report published by the New York Times on Sunday, Twitter recently let go of at least 200 workers, or around 10% of its workforce. Product managers, data scientists, machine learning and site reliability engineers, who were in charge of making sure Twitter’s various features ran without a hitch, were the individuals impacted on Saturday night. The NYT report cited sources with knowledge of the situation. Elon Musk reportedly fired dozens of sales and engineering staff last week despite telling them there wouldn’t be any further layoffs. One employee reportedly revealed that Musk had given the group a one-week deadline to enhance Twitter’s ad targeting system, according to sources. Many others, however, believed this to be impractical because it takes more time and resources to improve such a system. According to some sources, Musk’s lack of expertise in targeted advertising may have contributed to the layoffs. Musk revealed in January 2023 that there were roughly 2,300 people working on the company at the time. Around 200 employees were impacted by the most recent round of job cuts at Twitter, which included another round of layoffs. Musk cited a sharp decline in revenue as a result of advertisers reducing their expenditures, in part owing to worries about content moderation. Twitter has begun paying select content creators a portion of the revenue from advertisements in an effort to make up for a drop-in revenue. The Information reports that on Saturday, the social media site let go of dozens of employees.

Alibaba laid off 19,000 employees to improve cost efficiency

Alibaba Group Holding reduced its workforce by about 19,000 employees in response to the global economic downturn. Cost effectiveness is given priority in the decision. Alibaba made intentions to take a more cautious approach to spending and cut costs where they don’t have a long-term benefit in May. This change, which is in line with Beijing’s policies, marks a substantial departure from the company’s prior strategy of swiftly expanding into new markets. According to reports, the company’s expansion has been hampered by the state of the global economy, China’s rigorous Covid Zero strategy, lockdowns that limited consumer spending, and other factors. According to a Bloomberg report, the Hangzhou-based online retailer laid off more than 4,000 employees in the last quarter of the year, as shown in its earnings report that was made public on Thursday. When the company first saw a drop in revenue during the summer, the most significant job layoffs took place. Alibaba is still one of the largest private employers in China, despite having reduced its workforce to 239,740 employees, according to its latest report. The company announced earnings and profits that were higher than average analyst expectations, which led to a surge in the stock price. Alibaba, however, increased the number of job layoffs it made in December compared to September, indicating that it is still adjusting to a slower economy despite early signs of recovery.

Madhya Pradesh Govt to present paperless ‘e-Budget’ on March 1

On March 1, the Madhya Pradesh government will introduce an electronic budget for the first time in the state assembly. MLAs will receive tabs to read the proposals and department schemes rather than hard copies of the budget. The copies of the 2019 budget were given to MLAs along with pen drives. The state budget’s planning is almost finished, and authorities are working to give it its final form. Authorities stated that in addition to the departmental budget books being published, the e-budget will also be presented in the House for regular reference throughout the year. While the state budget for the previous year was over Rs 2.79 lakh crore, this year’s budget is anticipated to be in the range of Rs 3 lakh crore. Officials expected a ten percent increase. There would be announcements regarding farmers and women in the budget because it is an election year. The state government would also be concentrating on capital expenditures along the lines of the Union budget. At an expert presentation on the Union Budget 2023–24 for the state budget on February 6, the CM had stated that more than Rs 48,000 crore would be spent on infrastructure development. In the previous budget, a total of about Rs 44,000 crore was allocated to this category. Similarly, on February 3, the government had introduced the Ladli Bahna Yojana. A total of Rs 12,000 crore will be spent annually and Rs 60,000 crore in 5 years under the scheme. The budget would include funding for the programme because it would be a significant new programme this year. Announcements for farmers will be made in the budget, and it is expected that the state government will grant interest-free loans to provide relief. Fisheries have been given importance by the Indian government, and the state budget is likely to take this in mind as it details its proposals to the House.
