Tamil Nadu steps up vigil on border as tomato fever spreads in Kerala

After reports of tomato fever or flu spreading among children, the Tamil Nadu health authority has enhanced its vigilance at all checkpoints bordering Kerala. To scan youngsters under the age of five, health, police, and revenue authorities have been stationed at Walayar check post in Palakkad district, Kalliyakavali in Thiruvananthapuram, and Theni check posts. “The tomato flu or fever is a self-limiting one and there are no specific drugs for it,” a senior official with the Tamil Nadu health department told IANS. “If someone is affected with this disease, they should be kept in isolation as it spread fast from one person to the other.” The tomato flu, also known as tomato fever, is characterised by red rashes and blisters, thus the name. This flu causes severe fever and body aches in children under the age of five, as well as blisters and rashes on the skin. Three teams have been deployed at each check post, according to a Tamil Nadu health department official, to prevent children with rashes and blisters from entering the state. Dehydration, stomach pain, diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting are very common symptoms among infected children. Tomato flu has been reported in numerous districts across Kerala, prompting state health minister Veena George to send a caution about the disease. Source: IANS

Byju’s in talks with banks for $1 billion funding

Byju’s, India’s most valuable startup, is in talks with lenders to acquire more than $1 billion in acquisition financing as the online education provider looks to aggressively grow its business, people familiar with the situation stated. The Bangalore-based market leader is in talks with banks, including Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co., for funding to takeover another edtech company, according to the sources, who asked not to be named as the information is not public.  They didn’t say anything about the acquisition target and said that the terms of the transaction and the funding are yet to be finalized. Byju’s, helmed by former teacher Byju Raveendran, has been buying up businesses offering coding lessons, professional learning courses, and test prep programmes for competitive Indian examinations in recent years in the US and overseas. Bloomberg reported earlier this year that the business was valued at $22 billion after raising funds this year and is working on plans for an initial public offering. JPMorgan and Byju’s representatives declined to comment on the financing. Morgan Stanley representative did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment right away. According to information on the platform’s website, the platform’s app has been downloaded more than 150 million times, and clients spend an average of 71 minutes each day on it. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, Naspers Ltd., Tiger Global Management, and Sequoia Capital India have all invested in the company, which is formally known as Think & Learn Pvt. Ltd. After schools and tutoring centres were forced to close their doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic, forcing parents, teachers, and students to seek alternative learning resources, the popularity of online classes soared in the country of almost 1.4 billion people with one of the world’s youngest populations. Byju’s has also expanded its product portfolio to include one-on-one coaching with teachers in India and other countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, and Australia. Indian citizens and students are now eligible for a booster shot, according to the health minister

People travelling overseas can now get Covid booster shots if they need them, according to the Center. This follows NTAGI’s recommendation to reduce the time between the second and third shots for persons travelling abroad. “Indian citizens & students travelling overseas can now take the precaution dose as required by the guidelines of the destination country.” Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya wrote on Twitter. The National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI) said on Wednesday that those who want to go overseas can shorten the nine-month gap between the second and booster doses of the covid-19 vaccine, as required by the government. The recommendation was later forwarded to the Union Health ministry. Several requests for the precaution dose of Covid vaccine have been received by the Centre in recent months from people who need to travel abroad for work, business, admission to foreign educational institutes, participation in sports events, and bilateral and multilateral meetings as part of India’s official delegation. “The issue was discussed in a meeting of NTAGI held last week after which it recommended that those who need to travel overseas can take the booster shot, before the stipulated nine-month waiting period, as per the booster guidelines of the country they are travelling to,” a source told PTI. Meanwhile, NTAGI is meeting again this week to analyse data for covid-19 immunisation of children aged 5 to 12 years old and to finalise vaccination protocols. The results of the last two meetings were inconclusive, with NTAGI experts remaining sceptical of the paediatric data available for vaccination. Source: Mint

BharatPe to overhaul its governance model, sack several employees

Following a corporate governance review, BharatPe’s board of directors recommended several actions, including terminating some employees and vendors and initiating criminal charges against them for misconduct. BharatPe, which lets shop owners to make digital payments through QR codes and is planning an IPO, launched a corporate governance review in January to assuage investor concerns amid a public conflict regarding one of its co-founders’ personal investments. The company, which competes in India’s booming payments market with apps like SoftBank’s Paytm and Google Pay, came under intense investor and media scrutiny after co-founder Ashneer Grover sought damages from Uday Kotak, the head of Kotak Mahindra Bank, alleging that the bank denied him financing for a personal investment. According to Reuters, the audit will determine whether BharatPe’s senior officials are making sufficient internal disclosures regarding personal investments and will look for conflicts, resulting to the creation of a new code of conduct. The board of BharatPe has recommended various decisive steps that are being implemented after a careful examination of a report to find deliberate misconduct and gross negligence by a former founder during the last two months, the firm said in a statement. BharatPe said it was implementing a new vendor procurement policy to reduce the danger of staff engaging in suspicious activities to profit themselves, and that numerous individuals in departments who were directly associated with blacklisted vendors had their jobs terminated. “Many vendors involved in malpractices, such as incorrect or inflated invoices, have been blocked for further business with the company… the company has already issued legal notices to these vendors to recover the amount and will be filing civil or criminal cases against them in the coming days,” BharatPe added.

Cognizant Technology Solutions, a US-based software giant plans to hire 50,000 freshers in India this year. When the need arises, it will also hire experienced laterals. Cognizant employs over 75% of its workforce in India. In the first quarter, the company hired around 9,800 people. Cognizant reported a 10% increase in revenue to $4.8 billion in its financial results. This expansion can be linked to greater digitalization in businesses around the world. For the fourth year in a row, Cognizant has achieved double-digit growth. Not surprisingly, the Company’s digital division accounted for half of its total sales. In addition to the demand for digitalisation, the Company has made significant investments in this area, with 50% of its personnel having digital technology skills. Although attrition appears to have decreased marginally, it is impossible to predict whether this trend will continue. In the first quarter, attrition was 26%, down from 31% in the December quarter and 33% in the September quarter. The Company intends to keep attrition low by continuing to invest in learning, career path development, upskilling opportunities, and competitive pay packages. Promotions were also double in the previous year compared to the year before. Around one lakh employees were trained in new digital skills in 2021. That means about 23 million hours of learning were spent on around 1,30,000 courses.

Delhi University VC urges to look into students’ shortfall in enrolment under reserved categories

In a written letter, the Forum of Academics for Social Justice has asked Yogesh Singh, vice chancellor of Delhi University (DU), to examine admission data from the previous five years and look into the shortfall in enrolment of students from reserved categories before beginning the admission process this year. Hansraj Suman, the forum’s chairman and a former member of the DU’s Academic Council, alleges that university colleges annually admit more students than sanctioned seats, while reserved seats remain unoccupied. “Before starting the admission process under scheduled tribes (ST), other backward classes (OBC) and persons with disabilities (PWD) quota, the data of the last five years should be analysed. It will show that colleges have given more admissions than the sanctioned seats, while the reserved seats are not filled in return. Every year the seats of reserved categories remain vacant,” the letter stated. According to Suman, DU colleges make 10% more admissions than the sanctioned seats each year, and most colleges do not fill reserved seats on the increased seats. He has also requested Singh to form a college monitoring committee that will prepare a report on the lack of facilities at these institutions. “Delhi University should constitute a monitoring committee for the colleges at its level. Only teachers of reserved classes should be kept in this committee. The committee should visit these colleges and talk to the teachers or staff or students on their problems. Talk to those students on the problems faced by them and prepare a report on the lack of facilities in the colleges,” he stated. Last month, the DU vice-chancellor appointed an eight-member committee to investigate the “shortfall” in enrolment of SC and ST students at the university. Dean of Students Welfare Pankaj Arora chairs the committee, with Joint Dean of Students Welfare Gurpreet Singh serving as member secretary. “The Vice-Chancellor has constituted a committee to examine the issue regarding shortfall in the enrolment of the SC, ST students and make a recommendation to enhance the enrolment of SC, ST students in the University of Delhi with immediate effect,” the official notification had stated.
